IDF Soldier Liri Albag Released After 15 Months in Gaza Captivity, Returns to Israel
Israeli soldier Liri Albag has returned home after enduring a harrowing 15-month captivity in Gaza. Her release, along with fellow IDF soldiers Daniella Gilboa, Naama Levy, and Karina Ariev, marks a powerful moment of hope amid ongoing turmoil. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum described this development as a “triumph of spirit” and expressed gratitude for the reunion, while emphasizing the ongoing mission to secure the freedom of approximately 90 other hostages still held in Gaza.
Liri Albag, now 19, had only just begun her role as an observer at the Nahal Oz Outpost when she was abducted during the deadly October 7, 2023, attack. Her cousin, IDF Corporal Aya Albag, shared that Liri was thrilled to be stationed at Nahal Oz. Tragically, she was taken along with other female observers in a brazen assault on the base, as later revealed in video footage showing bloodied and injured women being held captive in a shelter.
During her captivity, Liri endured unimaginable hardships. Footage released earlier this month showed her visibly distressed, describing her ordeal. “I’m only 19 years old. I have my entire life in front of me, but now my entire life has been put on pause,” she tearfully stated. The video painted a chilling picture of life in captivity and underscored her growing despair about being forgotten by the world.
Testimonies from other released hostages, including Noa Argamani, revealed more details about Liri’s time in Gaza. They were reportedly kept in an underground tunnel, subjected to inhumane conditions, including limited food, saltwater for sustenance, and rare opportunities to shower. Noa described the captives being treated as domestic slaves, enduring further indignities throughout their confinement.
Family members had advocated tirelessly for Liri’s return. They shared anecdotes about her passions, including her dreams of traveling the world, exploring Japanese culture, and pursuing a career in interior design in Paris. Liri is known for her love of food, compiling a list of restaurants she wants to visit globally. Her personality shines through in her tattoos, including symbols of resilience such as a cherry blossom and a four-leaf clover.
Last week’s release of other hostages, including Emily Damari, Romi Gonen, and Doron Steinbrecher, also brought significant relief amid the broader agreement that facilitated the recent ceasefire. These acts underscore the ongoing, delicate negotiations between Hamas and Israeli authorities.
Liri’s return, though a joyous occasion for her family and community, reminds the world of the many captives who remain. Advocates stress the need for sustained global attention and unwavering efforts to bring every hostage home safely.
