Samajwadi Party Leader Harish Mishra Attacked in Varanasi by Karni Sena Supporters Over Controversial Remarks

Samajwadi Party leader Harish Mishra was attacked with a knife in a shocking incident that took place in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. The attackers, allegedly associated with the Karni Sena, launched the assault in retaliation to statements made by Mishra regarding the organization. The violent episode, which occurred in broad daylight, left both the leader and the attackers injured, sparking tension in the area and drawing widespread attention on social media platforms as videos from the scene went viral.

Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants were caught by an angry mob immediately after the attack. The crowd overpowered the two attackers, thrashed them severely, and handed them over to the police. In one of the circulating videos, both accused can be seen seated in a police van—one shirtless and the other with visible bloodstains on his clothing. A police officer is heard telling Harish Mishra that the attackers cannot be kept at the local police chowki in their current condition, suggesting instead that they be taken to the police station for medical treatment. Mishra is seen agreeing to the officer’s recommendation. The scene also captures the rising public outrage, with voices questioning whether the attackers would be transported in a police vehicle, reflecting the high emotions running through the crowd.

In another video, Harish Mishra is seen grabbing one of the assailants by the neck and directly handing him over to the authorities, highlighting the chaotic and emotionally charged environment at the scene of the attack.

The Varanasi police have confirmed legal proceedings against the attackers and stated that both parties sustained injuries in the confrontation and were sent for medical treatment. The situation is being closely monitored as the investigation progresses. Authorities have promised a thorough inquiry into the incident to determine the motive and background of the attackers involved.

This incident comes amid heightened tensions involving the Karni Sena. Earlier the same day, the Karni Sena staged a protest in Agra, visibly angered by remarks made by SP MP Ramji Lal Suman about historical figure Rana Sanga. During the protest, demonstrators were seen wielding swords and sticks, surrounding police forces and creating a volatile atmosphere. The protest coincided with the birth anniversary celebrations of Rana Sanga, adding further significance to the timing of their demonstration.

The controversy stems from a recent speech in Parliament by Ramji Lal Suman, where he challenged the narrative that links Indian Muslims to Babur. He stated that Muslims in India do not regard Babur as an ideal and instead questioned the historical role of Rana Sanga, who, according to him, invited Babur to India to defeat Ibrahim Lodi. Suman remarked that if Indian Muslims are labeled descendants of Babur, then by the same logic, those supporting Rana Sanga must be considered his descendants too, branding Rana Sanga a “traitor” in his statement. This provocative remark ignited outrage among Karni Sena supporters and is believed to have contributed to the hostile atmosphere leading up to the attack on Mishra.

The incident underscores the growing sensitivity around historical narratives and the volatile impact of political rhetoric in the current socio-political climate of India. The law enforcement agencies remain on alert, and further updates are expected as investigations continue.
