Almost a month into the violence of the Manipur state, around 98 people lost their lives as the firing events continued to take place in several parts of the state.
The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) issued an official statement that contained all the details about the incident, where 4,014 cases were recorded because of fire and 310 were injured. Nearly 144 stolen arms were recovered from the spot, the arms included 29 self-loading rifles, 10 grenade launchers and 12 INSAS rifles along with 11 magazines.
Around 3,734 FIRs were registered as per the CMO statement, Imphal west district had the maximum number of FIRs with the count of 1,257 cases, Kangpokpi with 932 FIRs and Bishnupur with 844 FIRs.
A Committee was announced to rejuvenate peace in the Manipur state, which was outraged by the clashes between the ethnic group, the panel was formed with 51 members including people from Kuki and Meitei communities.
The people from the Kuki community made a statement on Sunday that they were appointed as committee members without taking their consent and they are not happy about this decision. They also said that the Central government has to be a part of the panel rather than leaving each and everything to the Chief Minister and to the state government.
The committee announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) included a majority seat of 25 from the Meitei community, almost 11 members from Kuki groups, 10 from the Naga community, 3 members representing the Muslim community and two representatives from Nepali community.
Governor Anusuiya Uikey was named as the chairperson of the peace committee, CM Biren Singh and a few Ministers along with the MPs, MLAs of several political parties were announced as the members of the committee.
The MHA while announcing the panel said that there will be representatives from several ethnic groups and didn’t disclose any further details. On June 10, an order was issued with the details about the members of the peace Committee.
Two retired professors, five social workers, retired government officials and the chairman of Bar Council represented the civilians. Former DGP Doungel was also included in the committee.
The objective of the committee was ‘to establish peace, communal and social harmony between various ethnic groups of Manipur and also to develop a sense of safety and security among the public’. This committee enhances mutual understanding, social cohesiveness and facilitates gracious communication among the different ethnic groups.
