The flood situation in Assam took a serious turn on Monday, affecting more than 190,000 individuals due to the heavy rainfall. As per the officials, one person lost their life due to the heavy rain. Continuous rainfall in the higher altitudes has resulted in rise in the water levels of the rivers, causing several of them to overflow the danger level in various regions of the state. Consequently, ferry operations on the Brahmaputra river have been halted in Guwahati and Nematighat in Jorhat due to the escalating water levels.

Lakhimpur district was hit badly, where 47,338 people have been affected and next comes the Dhemaji district with 40,997 affected population. Altogether, 45 relief distribution centers are functional, where 427 people are taking refuge in two relief camps.

As reported by the authority, The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has confirmed one death in Demow, Sivasagar district; almost 15 people in total were found dead during floods this year. This ongoing rainstorm has impacted nearly 190,675 individuals across 17 districts.

ASDMA stated that, Rescue operations in various affected regions were taken care of by the local administration and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). Most important rivers like the Brahmaputra are currently surpassing the danger level at locations including Dibrugarh, Dhubri, Tezpur, and Nematighat in Jorhat. The Beki, Jia-Bharali, Disang, Dikhou, and Subansiri rivers have also exceeded their danger levels.

On Tuesday 29 August, The Water Transport Department in the state announced the temporary stoppage of ferry services in Guwahati due to the increase in the water level of the Brahmaputra. Ferry services connecting Nematighat and Majuli have been halted due to continuous rainfall in higher areas.

ASDMA said, “Nearly 8,086.40 hectares of farmland is currently flooded with rainwater, affecting 1,30,514 animals, including 81,340 large animals and 11,886 poultry. Two locations in Udalguri, and one from both Biswanath and Darrang has noted the breach of embankment due to flooding in those areas.

Erosion incidents were observed in multiple districts such as Barpeta, Biswanath, Dhubri, Lakhimpur, Morigaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, and Udalguri. The flood has also resulted in damage to roads, bridges, power poles, schools, and other structures.
