Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s recent comments linking women’s education to population control have ignited a heated debate, with both supporters and critics expressing their views on the matter.
During a speech in the Bihar legislative assembly, Kumar suggested that educated women are better equipped to make informed decisions regarding their reproductive health, potentially contributing to population stabilization efforts.
His remarks drew immediate criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which denounced them as an “attack on the dignity of women.” The National Commission for Women (NCW) also condemned Kumar’s statements, labeling them as “crass” and demanding an apology from the CM.
NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma asserted that Kumar’s remarks were an affront to women’s dignity and respect, further criticizing the derogatory language used during his speech. She emphasized that such language is unacceptable and constitutes a “dark stain” on society.
However, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav defended Kumar, claiming that his comments were misinterpreted. Yadav clarified that Kumar was referring to the importance of sex education, a subject taught in schools as part of the biology curriculum. He reiterated that Kumar’s focus was on population control and urged against misinterpreting his statements.
BJP national spokesperson Guru Prakash Paswan, on the other hand, maintained that Kumar’s remarks constituted an attack on women’s dignity. He expressed embarrassment and dismay as a Bihari and demanded an apology from the CM.
Kumar’s comments have reignited the ongoing debate on the role of women’s education in population control. In a separate incident, BJP leader Sunil Kumar Bidhuri faced criticism for his derogatory remarks targeting a Muslim man MP during a Lok Sabha proceeding. Bidhuri reportedly referred to the MP as a “militant,” “terrorist,” “pimp,” and “circumcised.”
Inconsistent Response from NCW and BJP
The NCW’s and BJP’s differing responses to the remarks made by Nitish Kumar and Sunil Kumar Bidhuri have drawn criticism for their apparent inconsistency. While the NCW swiftly condemned Kumar’s comments on women’s education, it maintained a relative silence regarding Bidhuri’s offensive remarks targeting a Muslim MP.
The BJP’s stance on the matter has also been criticized for its perceived double standards. While the party vehemently opposed Kumar’s remarks, it has remained largely silent on Bidhuri’s derogatory language, raising questions about its commitment to promoting tolerance and respect for all individuals.
