The Congress party is taking the lead in Telangana as early leads on Sunday reveal the opposition ahead of the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). As of 12:30 pm, the Congress is leading in over 64 seats, with the BRS trailing at 40 seats and the BJP at 9 seats. The counting of votes for the Telangana Assembly election commenced at 8 am, with a focus on postal ballots initially, followed by those polled through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The majority mark in the state is 60 seats.
The voting, which took place across the 119 constituencies of Telangana on November 30, witnessed a 70.60% voter turnout. Notably, the highest turnout was recorded in Jangaon at 83.34%, followed closely by Narasampet at 83% and Dubbak at 82.75%. However, Hyderabad saw a lower turnout at only 39.97%. A total of 32.6 million voters were enrolled, and 35,655 polling stations were set up across the state.
Key candidates in the fray include Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, contesting from Kamareddy and Gajwel, his minister-son K T Rama Rao from Sircilla, Telangana Congress unit chief A Revanth Reddy from Kamareddy and Kodangal, senior BJP leader Eatala Rajender from Gajwel and Huzurabad, and BJP Lok Sabha member Bandi Sanjay Kumar from Karimnagar.
As the initial round of counting unfolds, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao is trailing in the Kamareddy constituency, with A Revanth Reddy, the state Congress president, leading by over 2,000 votes. The Congress has taken an early lead across the state, except in the Hyderabad urban region.
Multiple exit polls had predicted a tight contest, with some indicating the possibility of the Congress ending KCR’s reign in India’s youngest state. However, the India TV-CNX exit polls had suggested BRS returning to power with 70 seats.
