IB World Schools in India Grow by 31%, Expanding Presence.

The International Baccalaureate (IB), headquartered in Switzerland, has experienced substantial growth in India over the past five years, with a 31% surge in authorized IB World Schools. Currently, there are 226 IB World Schools across the country, delivering a total of 378 authorized IB programmes, including the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), Diploma Programme (DP), and Career-Related Programme (CP).

These programs aim to provide Indian students with a comprehensive education, a global outlook, and a skill set highly valued by international universities. The surge in authorized IB World Schools is seen as a positive trend, reflecting the increasing acceptance and adoption of IB programmes by schools across the country. Experts suggest that this growth is indicative of the education sector’s ongoing transformation in India.

While the majority of IB World Schools are currently concentrated in metropolitan areas such as New Delhi, Gurugram, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Chennai, efforts are being made to enhance accessibility and affordability nationwide. The Delhi Board of Secondary Education (DBSE) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the IB in 2021 to introduce IB programmes in 30 government schools in Delhi. This initiative is part of broader educational reforms led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

As the educational landscape evolves in India, the IB is actively collaborating with Indian institutions and educational authorities to expand its framework to students from diverse backgrounds and regions. The goal is to provide a high-quality, globally-oriented education to an increasing number of students. Ongoing dialogues with educational leaders are expected to facilitate this process.

The Diploma Programme (DP) offered by the IB is particularly highlighted for its global excellence, with courses aligning with or surpassing international standards. The DP country alignment study of 2023 emphasizes the adaptability of DP courses to diverse national contexts, showcasing their seamless integration. The study underscores the rigor and comprehensive educational value of DP curricula, designed to facilitate substantial depth and breadth of learning.

The IB’s emphasis on languages and global principles is acknowledged, fostering a profound comprehension of the world. Graduates of IB programmes are described as developing into multilingual thinkers, capable of making a positive impact on a global scale. As more schools consider adopting IB programmes, the landscape of education in India is poised for continued transformation, aligning with the evolving needs of students in an interconnected world.
