The arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a money laundering case raises concerns: Can anyone be arrested for speaking out against Modi?

New Delhi, March 21, 2024: The arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in connection with a money laundering case linked to the Delhi excise policy has reignited debates surrounding political vendetta and governance integrity. Senior AAP leader Atishi reiterated the party’s stance that Kejriwal would continue to serve as Chief Minister from jail, emphasizing their commitment to governance despite the setback.

“Our lawyers are approaching the Supreme Court for an urgent hearing tonight,” Atishi stated, underscoring the party’s swift legal response to the unfolding situation.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva welcomed Kejriwal’s arrest, alleging a conspiracy to promote alcoholism among youth under Kejriwal’s government. Sachdeva accused Kejriwal of political theatrics and hailed the arrest as a victory for truth.

However, Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit criticized the timing and manner of Kejriwal’s arrest, expressing concerns over due process and investigations.

The arrest comes amidst a backdrop of political tension, with Kejriwal previously vocal in his criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policies and governance style. Kejriwal’s apprehensions about being targeted for his dissent have been echoed in his earlier statements.

Moreover, the arrest of AAP leaders Sanjay Singh and Manish Sisodia in connection with the Delhi Liquor Policy case adds another layer of complexity to the situation. Both leaders are in judicial custody until March 7, facing allegations of corruption and money laundering related to the excise policy.

The Delhi liquor scam case revolves around allegations of favoritism and bribery in the formulation and implementation of the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22. The AAP has vehemently denied these allegations, labeling them as politically motivated.

As legal proceedings unfold and political tensions simmer, the governance landscape in Delhi faces uncertainty. The broader implications of these arrests on the political discourse and public trust remain to be seen.
