MEA Jaishankar highlighted the need for deeper India-Maldives ties to boost regional prosperity in his meeting with President Muizzu.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu on Saturday, highlighting India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations for the benefit of both nations and the region. This visit marks the first high-level engagement since President Muizzu’s pro-China administration took office.

Jaishankar, on a three-day official visit, conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s greetings and underscored India’s intent to enhance cooperation. This visit follows President Muizzu’s trip to India in June for Modi’s swearing-in ceremony.

Jaishankar also met with Maldivian Defence Minister Ghassan Maumoon to discuss bilateral security and regional stability, especially in light of China’s increased influence in the Maldives. The visit aims to reset ties strained since Muizzu’s demand for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel last November.

Jaishankar’s trip, the first since his reappointment in June 2024, is part of India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and Vision SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region), focusing on strengthening and expanding bilateral relations.
