An old video of shops on fire in Bangladesh is being circulated with a misleading communal narrative.

A video of shops engulfed in flames is being falsely circulated as recent footage from the ongoing protests in Bangladesh, claiming that the shops belonged to a Hindu man named Rajan Chandra and insinuating that Hindus are being targeted. However, this video is unrelated to the current unrest and has no communal angle.

The video, originally shared by accounts like Sudarshan News and ‘Baba Banaras’ on X (formerly Twitter), is actually from an incident in Lakshmipura, Bangladesh, where around 15 shops caught fire on July 11, 2024. Reports from local journalists and news outlets confirm that the fire was accidental, with no communal motive involved. Despite claims of targeting, no evidence supports that the shops were owned by a Hindu man or that the fire was related to religious tensions.

This incident is being misrepresented as part of the current protests, but in reality, it occurred weeks earlier and was unrelated to any communal violence. The claims circulating online are misleading and contribute to spreading disinformation during a sensitive time.
