1. Abanindranath Tagore 

Tagore was born on 7^th August 1871. He was the principal artist and a creator of the “Indian Society of Oriental Art”.  In Indian Art, he was also a first major exponent of Swadeshi values. He founded Bengal School of Arts which made him to build a foundation for modern paint.

He was most famous for Children’s literature. He was most popularly known as Aban Thakur for his books Rajkahini, Budo Angula, Khirer Putul, and Nalak. His books are landmark for Bengali literature and mostly for Children.

Ganesh Janani, Bharat Mata, he Victory of Buddha, The Passing of Shah Jahan, Journey’s End, Personal Life, Journey’s End etc

 

2. Amrita Sher Gil

She was born on 30^th January 1913. She was an eminent Hungarian-Indian painter. She was called as one of the greatest Avant-grade women artists of the early 20^th Century. She spent most of her life in travelling to Countries like Turkey, France, and India. While travelling, she derived highly from the art styles and cultures of the Countries. Young Girls is the oil painting drawn by her at the age of 19 years. This bought her a lot of fame. Besides painting, she was also avid reader and a pianist. She is a British Indian. Her famous art are as follows Klára Szepessy, 1932, Hungarian Gypsy Girl, 1932, Group of Three Girls, 1935, Bride’s Toilet, 1937, Village Scene, 1938, The little girl in blue, Haldi Grinders, Brahmacharis, Young girls, Two elephants, Sumair, Mother India, Self portrait as Tahitian, Sleeping woman, Two women, Malcolm muggeridge, Nude Study, Resting, The swing, Yusuf Ali khan etc

 

3. F. N. Souza

His full name was Francis Newton Souza. He was born on 12^th April 1924 and is commonly referred as F. N. Souza. For progressive Artists Group of Bombay, he was a founding member. He was the first person to achieve highest recognition in the west. His style will exhibit both low-life and high energy. He was born to Roman Catholic parents in the village of Saligao, Goa. Later his family moved to Mumbai. In 1947, he joined a communist party in 1947.

He was known for his famous art, which are as follows standing nude, two saints in a landscape, Crucifxion, The red road, Eros killing thanatos, Still life with chalice, Still life with pots etc and many art with no name

 

4. Jamini Roy

He was born on 11^th April 1887. He was an Indian painter. He was awarded with Padma Bhushan in 1954. He was a best-known pupil of Rabindranath Tagore. In his paintings, originality and contribution to modern art are main attributes. His parents were land owners in Beliatore which means he was born to a moderate family.
He started his career as a commissioned portrait painter. Because of an effort to discover his own talent, he gave up commissioned portrait portal in early1920’s. He featured a new style based on Bengali folks. Hence, he changed his style from his academic western training. His famous art are Mother and child, Rabindranath Tagore, Dancing Gopi, Bride and two companion, Krishna jasoda, Lady in pink sari, fawn etc. He died on 24^th April 1972.

 

5. Jatin das

He was born in 1941. He is an Indian painter and Sculptor. He was also well known for his drawing too. He completed his schooling at Sir JJ School of Art, Bombay. He worked under professor S. B. Palsikar. He started participating in the art exhibitions for both National and International levels. He did his schooling at Sir JJ School of Art, Bombay. S. B. Palsikar used to be his professor. His schooling lasted for five years from 1957 to 1962.
Later, he started participating in National and International level painting competitions. Few of the exhibitions he participated are namely the Biennales in 1971, in Venice in 1978, and the Documenta in Kessel in 1975. His famous paintings are Man-woman, Flight of steel, working woman.

 

6. M. F. Husain

His full name is Maqbool Fida Husain. He was born on 17^th September 1915. He was a modern India painter. He was also a founding member of Bombay Progressive Artists Group.
In 1940’s, he was also associated with modern modernism. His early association with Bombay Progressive Artists was a lot inspired by the new India in 1947 after the partition.
His themes in paintings include diverse topics like Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Mother Teresa, the British Raj, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and rural and Urban life of India. He also worked as a director for few films which bought him many awards. He received The National Film award for best Experimental film in 1967 for the film ‘Through the eyes of a Painter ‘. His famous paintings are Mother India, British raj, Mother Teresa,Red landscape, Lady with veena, Living Goddess, Horses, Rajasthani women, The los princesses etc

 

7. Nandal Bose
                     Nandal was born on 3^rd December 1882. He is also considered as one of the pioneers of modern Indian art. He is also a key figure for contextual modernism. He was a pupil of Abanindranath Tagore. He was also considered for his Indian Style of painting. In 1922, he became principal of Kala Bhavan, Santi Niketan. He was mostly inspired by the Tagore family and the sculptures of Ajanta. His classic works include paintings of scenes from Indian mythologies, village life, and Indian Women. His paintings are new clouds, Darjeeling and fog, Floating a canoe, Gandhi march, Tiller of soil, Pranam, dhaki, Sabari in her youth, Dhol wala, A pandit etc

 

8. Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore is the most famous person from ancient India. He was born on 7^th May 1861. He was a Bengali polymath from the Indian subcontinent. He was also a poet, Musician, and artist.
In late 19^th Century or early 20^th Century, he reshaped Bengali literature, music, and Indian art with Contextual Modernism. He is mostly referred to as the Bard of Bengal. Tagore was a poet since he is eight years old. He died on 7th August 1941 and his cremation place was Nimtala Cremation, Calcutta, British India. His known paintings are Landscape, Dancing woman, Woman’s face, Head study

 

9. Raja Ravi Varma

Raja Ravi Varma who is a Malayali painter and an artist. He was born on 29^th April 1848. He is considered as one of the greatest painters of Indian history for several aesthetic sciences and boarder social reasons. He was most famous for making affordable lithographs of his paintings in which most of them were mostly available to the public. He later died on 2^nd October 1906 at the age of 58 years. His art are Shakuntala, galaxy of musicians, The comes papa, Kadambari, Reclining nayar lady, Keechaka and sairandhri, Sita in Ashoka grove.

 

10. Satish Gujral

Satish was born on 25^th December 1925. He is an Indian painter, muralist, writer, and sculptor and a writer of the post-independent era. Inder Kumar Gujral who is a former Prime Minister of India was his elder brother. In 1999, he was awarded Padma Vibhushan. He became visually impaired of  hearing after a tragic incident in his childhood, but he later gained it through surgery at the age of 62 years. His famous paintings are Days of glory, Mourning en masse, raising of lazarus, Tree of life
