Father and Son Killed in West Bengal’s Murshidabad During Protests Over Waqf Amendment Bil

In a tragic turn of events in West Bengal, two persons—a father and son—were brutally killed amid violent clashes in Murshidabad’s Samserganj area, allegedly linked to the ongoing protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. The incident has intensified concerns over law and order in the region, which has been on edge following widespread unrest related to the controversial amendment.

According to a senior IPS officer, the victims were discovered inside their residence in Jafrabad, a locality within the violence-hit Samserganj block. Both had sustained multiple stab wounds and were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they were declared brought dead. The horrific incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with the family of the deceased alleging that miscreants broke into their house, looted valuables, and brutally attacked the father and son before fleeing the scene.

This brutal double murder is not an isolated act of violence. Earlier on the same day, another individual reportedly sustained a bullet wound in the Dhulian area, also located within the Samserganj block. The entire district of Murshidabad has been on high alert as tensions escalated during Friday’s large-scale protests in Suti and Samserganj over the Waqf (Amendment) Act. Protesters have voiced strong opposition to the recent amendments, which they claim threaten the autonomy and traditional rights associated with waqf properties. These demonstrations have, unfortunately, spiraled into outbreaks of violence in several parts of the district.

The Waqf (Amendment) Act has been at the center of heated debates, and the resulting unrest has brought local governance under scrutiny. Law enforcement agencies are now under pressure to restore peace and bring the perpetrators of these crimes to justice. Authorities have ramped up security in the affected areas, and investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances and motivations behind the attacks.

The situation remains tense, with local residents calling for immediate intervention and justice for the victims. Political leaders and civil society organizations are also beginning to weigh in, demanding accountability and steps to prevent further escalation.
