FBI Reports 10.3% Decline in Violent Crime in Early 2024

According to preliminary data from the FBI, violent crime in the United States has seen a notable decrease of 10.3% during the first half of 2024. This information comes from the Quarterly Uniform Crime Report, which encompasses data collected from January to June 2024.

The report highlights the following reductions in specific crime categories:

  • Murder: Down 22.7%
  • Rape: Down 17.7%
  • Robbery: Down 13.6%
  • Aggravated Assault: Down 8.1%
  • Property Crime: Down 13.1%

This preliminary data is based on voluntary submissions from 14,809 out of 19,311 law enforcement agencies nationwide.

Regionally, the Midwest reported the most significant decline, with violent crime dropping by 12%. The ongoing decrease in violent crime rates is particularly relevant as it becomes a key issue for voters in the upcoming presidential election.

In comparison, data released last month indicated that violent crime fell by 3% from 2022 to 2023, with a remarkable 11.6% reduction in murders. An FBI official noted that this decrease in murders marked the largest drop since the agency began collecting such data. Other statistics from that period showed rape decreased by 9.4%, aggravated assault fell by 2.8%, and robbery decreased slightly by 0.3%.
