Google Confirms Pixel 7a Battery Swelling Issue, Offers Free Repairs and Cash Compensation in Select Countries

Google has officially acknowledged a concerning battery swelling issue affecting its popular Pixel 7a smartphones. In a recently published support page, the tech giant confirmed that some Pixel 7a units are experiencing battery bulging, rapid battery drain, or even charging problems. This announcement comes after users reported noticing their devices appearing unusually thick or the back cover starting to bulge or come loose, raising concerns over device performance and safety. The company has launched an extended repair and compensation program to address this issue, offering free battery replacements and even financial compensation in certain regions.

According to Google, the battery swelling problem can manifest in several ways, including a visibly swollen phone, a back cover that pops off or detaches, and charging-related issues. These symptoms not only affect the functionality of the phone but could also pose potential safety risks if not addressed promptly. In response, Google is offering a one-time free battery replacement for affected Pixel 7a units. However, the device must meet specific conditions to qualify for the free service. Phones that show signs of water damage, have been punctured by sharp objects, or have sustained significant drop-related damage may not be eligible for the battery replacement. Furthermore, if the screen or back glass is cracked, Google may charge a fee for repairing those specific components, even if the battery replacement itself is free.

Battery replacement services are currently available at authorized walk-in repair centers in select countries, including the United States, India, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, and Singapore. For users in the US and India, Google has also made mail-in repair services available, offering greater flexibility and convenience.

In countries where repair services are not available, Google is providing alternative compensation options. Pixel 7a owners whose devices are no longer under warranty can receive either $200 in cash or a $300 discount toward the purchase of a new Pixel phone. Those with devices still under warranty may be eligible for a higher payout of $456 in cash. However, it is important to note that these compensation options are not available in the US and India, where repair services already exist. Additionally, once a user chooses either the repair or compensation route, that choice is final and cannot be changed later.

Google has also clarified that receiving a battery replacement does not extend the original warranty period of the Pixel 7a. The warranty will expire on its originally scheduled date, regardless of whether or not the battery has been replaced.

This move by Google demonstrates a proactive approach in addressing hardware-related issues and maintaining customer trust. Pixel 7a users experiencing any of the mentioned symptoms are strongly encouraged to check their eligibility and act promptly to avoid further complications.
