Google Layoffs 2025: Job Cuts Likely to Impact Hyderabad and Bengaluru Offices as Restructuring Continues

Google Layoffs 2025: Job Cuts Likely to Impact Hyderabad and Bengaluru Offices as Restructuring Continues

Google is reportedly gearing up for another round of layoffs, and this time, employees in India—particularly those based in Hyderabad and Bengaluru—may be significantly affected. According to a report by Business Standard, the upcoming layoffs will primarily target roles in advertising, sales, and marketing. This fresh round of job cuts follows a global restructuring effort that saw hundreds of Google employees already let go in various divisions.

While the Indian engineering workforce in Google’s Hyderabad and Bengaluru offices is expected to avoid immediate layoffs, reports suggest that many may be reassigned to more revenue-generating projects. This realignment is part of Google’s broader plan to streamline its operations and improve efficiency in response to shifting market dynamics. Although Google has not issued an official statement confirming the layoffs in India or disclosing the number of employees affected, the developments are in line with the company’s ongoing global restructuring strategy.

The layoffs are the latest in a series of cuts affecting multiple departments across Google. Earlier this year, employees in the Platforms and Devices division—which handles Android software, Pixel phones, and the Chrome browser—were also laid off. The move followed the internal merger of the Platforms and Devices teams, a structural shift aimed at enhancing operational efficiency. This division is currently led by Google Senior Vice President Rick Osterloh.

In addition to job reductions, Google has introduced voluntary exit schemes in 2025, encouraging employees to resign ahead of planned mass layoffs. These schemes are part of the company’s strategic efforts to downsize in a more controlled and cost-effective manner. A company spokesperson acknowledged that since the internal reorganization, the focus has been on making the teams more agile and responsive to new business demands. These changes have come with tough decisions, including a reduction in workforce across several units.

Earlier this year, Google’s cloud division also experienced job cuts, though these affected only a select few teams. The layoffs across departments like cloud, advertising, and platforms indicate a widespread transformation across the tech giant’s core product lines. In 2023, Google had already laid off approximately 12,000 employees—roughly 6% of its global workforce—in a similar move to realign with its strategic product goals, which also impacted teams in India.

This latest development comes amid a broader trend in the tech industry, where major companies are restructuring due to shifts driven by artificial intelligence, performance-based evaluations, and a heightened focus on operational efficiency. According to data from Layoffs.fyi, over 23,500 tech workers have lost their jobs so far in 2025 across 93 companies. The restructuring wave sweeping through companies like Google and Microsoft highlights the growing impact of AI-led innovation on employment dynamics and business models.
