Gujarat Titans Script IPL History with Record 204-Run Chase Against Delhi Capitals in Ahmedabad

In a thrilling IPL 2025 encounter at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat Titans pulled off a historic win against Delhi Capitals, chasing down a daunting target of 204 to set a new benchmark in IPL history. This remarkable chase now stands as the highest-ever successful run chase against Delhi Capitals in the tournament’s history, surpassing the previous record of 188 set by Chennai Super Kings in 2008. Gujarat Titans, with this emphatic seven-wicket victory, not only secured their fifth win of the season but also climbed to the top of the points table, making a bold statement in their bid for the IPL 2025 title.

The hero of the night was Jos Buttler, who delivered a scintillating unbeaten knock of 97 runs off just 54 balls. His innings was a masterclass in controlled aggression and timing, featuring 11 crisp boundaries and 4 towering sixes. Buttler’s composure at the crease was evident as he anchored Gujarat’s innings with confidence and class. His performance not only guided GT to a record-breaking chase but also stood out as one of the finest individual efforts of the season so far.

Buttler found solid support in Sherfane Rutherford, who came in as an impact substitute and played a crucial knock of 43 runs. The duo forged a match-defining 119-run partnership for the third wicket, effectively neutralizing Delhi Capitals’ bowling attack and ensuring that the required run rate never spiraled out of control. Their partnership was a turning point in the match, showcasing GT’s depth and strategic use of substitutions.

For Gujarat Titans, this chase of 204 runs is now their highest-ever successful run chase in IPL history, eclipsing their previous best of 198 against Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2023. Other notable chases by the Titans include 197 against Rajasthan Royals in 2024, 196 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2022, and 190 against Punjab Kings in the same season. This new record adds yet another feather to their cap in what has been a stellar campaign.

Delhi Capitals, after being put into bat, posted a competitive total of 203/8. Axar Patel top-scored with a fighting 39, while Gujarat’s bowling unit, led by Prasidh Krishna’s impressive figures of 4/41, managed to restrict the flow of runs in the latter overs. Despite the challenging total, DC’s bowlers failed to defend it on a pitch that seemed to favor batting under lights. Axar, standing in as captain, later admitted that they were probably 10-15 runs short of a par score on this surface.

Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill lauded the clinical chase and praised Buttler’s knock as “a treat to watch,” reflecting the mood in the Titans’ camp after a near-perfect execution of a steep chase. The victory also sends a clear message to other contenders in the league about Gujarat’s ability to handle pressure and deliver when it matters the most.

With this win, GT now lead the IPL 2025 points table and appear to be strong contenders for the playoff stages. Their ability to chase down big totals, adapt to different match situations, and capitalize on key moments is setting them apart in the competition.
