New Delhi: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), a state-owned aircraft manufacturer, is optimistic about delivering all 83 Tejas Mk1A light combat aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF) within the 2028-29 timeframe.
A senior HAL official assured that there are no major concerns as “our production line is set up and we are addressing the minor issues that remain. We are confident of meeting the delivery schedule.”
Recently, the Indian Air Force raised concerns about delays in the delivery of the first Tejas Mk1A fighter jet, which was initially planned for February-March. However, HAL has now pledged to deliver the first jet by November.
Under the agreement, HAL had promised to deliver 16 fighter jets annually. The IAF has requested at least 8 jets for this year. The official attributed the delays to engine supply issues and some development challenges.
HAL and General Electric have finalized a contract for 99 F404 engines. Another official mentioned: “We expect GE to begin engine deliveries in September. We aim to provide more than 8 jets by the end of this fiscal year (March 2025).”
Regarding meeting the delivery deadline, the official explained: “Our two facilities in Bengaluru are currently operational with a combined production capacity of 16 aircraft. The third facility in Nashik will start operations in October, with the potential to produce 8 jets or more.”
In 2021, the Defence Ministry signed a Rs 48,000 crore contract with HAL for 83 Tejas Mk1A aircraft for the IAF.
Additionally, in August 2021, HAL secured a USD 716 million deal with General Electric for 99 F404 engines and related support services for the Tejas Mk1A.
It is important to note that the LCA Tejas is expected to become a key component of the Indian Air Force’s future, helping to address the shortage in fighter squadrons. Currently, the IAF operates 30 fighter squadrons, short of the sanctioned 42.
