U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris condemned former President Donald Trump’s recent visit to Arlington National Cemetery, accusing him of dishonoring a revered site by turning it into a political spectacle. Trump, who is the Republican nominee, visited the cemetery despite federal rules against campaign activities on the premises, and his team reportedly captured and shared images, even after being warned about the restrictions.
In a statement on the social media platform X, Harris highlighted reports that Trump’s aides clashed with a cemetery staff member before proceeding to film and photograph Trump, including at the graves of Afghanistan war veterans. Harris emphasized that Arlington is a solemn place meant to honor American heroes, not for political purposes.
The incident is rooted in ongoing criticism from Trump and Republicans regarding the Biden administration’s handling of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. At the invitation of some families of service members killed during the withdrawal, Trump laid wreaths at the graves of Sgt. Nicole Gee, Staff Sgt. Darin Hoover, and Staff Sgt. Ryan Knauss. These service members were among the 13 U.S. troops and over 100 Afghans who perished in the August 26, 2021, bombing at Hamid Karzai International Airport.
Despite warnings, Trump’s campaign continued with the photoshoot, which led to an altercation. Defense officials stated that an Arlington employee, who was allegedly verbally abused and pushed by two of Trump’s staff, declined to press charges. Trump’s campaign has since criticized Pentagon officials, with top adviser Chris LaCivita labeling military spokespersons as “hacks.” The Trump campaign maintains that it had permission to bring someone to record the visit.
As President Biden seeks reelection, Trump has intensified his focus on Harris, particularly her involvement in foreign policy decisions, including the Afghanistan withdrawal. Harris noted Trump’s history of disparaging veterans and reiterated allegations that he has previously referred to fallen service members as “suckers” and “losers” while belittling Medal of Honor recipients.
