In the case of the junior doctor’s death in Kolkata, police have made one arrest and added rape charges to the existing murder investigation.

On Saturday, Kolkata police arrested Sanjoy Roy in connection with the death of a junior doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. The case, initially registered as a murder, now includes charges of rape. A special investigation team has been assigned to the case.

The 31-year-old doctor was discovered dead in a seminar hall at the hospital on Friday morning. The inquest report indicated that her body was found with multiple injuries, bloodied, and partially unclothed.

The incident has sparked widespread protests at the hospital, with many doctors going on strike to demand a comprehensive investigation. On Saturday, medical professionals from other institutions joined the demonstration.

Police sources revealed that Roy’s arrest followed analysis of CCTV footage from the hospital. The victim’s father reported that he had spoken to his daughter the previous evening at 11 pm and described her as sounding normal. He expressed shock upon learning of her death, raising suspicions of both rape and murder.

The doctor had been on duty until 2 am on Friday. The hospital has established two panels to investigate the incident: one for an internal review and another for conducting the postmortem.
