India Reaffirms Stance Against Illegal Immigration as US Steps Up Crackdown

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has reaffirmed its stance against illegal immigration, highlighting the importance of adherence to immigration laws globally. Addressing concerns about Indian nationals staying illegally in the United States, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India opposes illegal immigration worldwide due to its strong connection to various forms of organized crime. The spokesperson clarified the government’s position during a press briefing, emphasizing India’s commitment to taking back its undocumented citizens if their Indian nationality can be verified.

Jaiswal underlined that India remains steadfast in facilitating the return of its citizens who are overstaying or residing without valid documentation abroad. He said the repatriation process depends on proper documentation and verification of nationality. Once it is established that the individuals are indeed Indian nationals, the government is ready to proceed with arrangements to bring them back to the country.

These remarks come shortly after External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed a similar viewpoint. He reiterated that while India supports legal global mobility and advocates for Indian talent to access opportunities internationally, the government strongly opposes illegal migration. According to Jaishankar, illegal activities tied to unauthorized migration are detrimental not only to the country’s reputation but also contribute to other unlawful activities.

During a media interaction, Jaishankar pointed out that India has consistently demonstrated its openness to the legitimate return of undocumented Indians from the US or any other country. He noted that the government works closely with other nations to address such issues while ensuring adherence to legal frameworks. Reports have indicated that approximately 18,000 Indians in the United States are facing deportation for overstaying their visas or residing without proper authorization.

The US has been ramping up its efforts to tackle illegal immigration under President Donald Trump’s administration. Trump, who began his second term with a focus on stricter immigration enforcement, has emphasized the need to combat illegal activities at the southern border and beyond. On his first day back in office, he signed executive orders declaring a national emergency at the US-Mexico border, reinforcing border security with additional troops and announcing comprehensive deportation measures.

In alignment with these measures, the White House confirmed the arrest of 538 individuals in a large-scale operation targeting illegal immigrants. Among those apprehended were a suspected terrorist, several gang members, and individuals convicted of serious crimes, including offenses against minors. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt highlighted these actions on social media, noting the administration’s commitment to securing the country and enforcing immigration laws effectively.

These developments reflect the ongoing collaborative efforts between India and the United States to address the challenges posed by illegal migration. Both governments remain focused on ensuring that legal pathways for migration are respected while addressing the adverse consequences of unauthorized mobility.
