Israel-Gaza Live Updates: US Official Highlights 2 Key Obstacles in Ceasefire Negotiations

As the Israel-Hamas conflict continues, the latest round of ceasefire talks has hit a deadlock.

Following the discovery of six hostages killed in Gaza, protests erupted across Israel, with demonstrators demanding the government bring back the remaining hostages.

Latest Developments:

Sep 5, 5:25 AM
Israel’s Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, has vowed that Hamas will “pay a heavy price” amid the push for a ceasefire, urging the nation to stay united. Katz emphasized that “anyone who cold-bloodedly murders six hostages isn’t looking for a deal” and confirmed that Israel would respond forcefully to the killings. Katz’s remarks echoed a report from Axios, which noted the White House’s growing skepticism that Hamas is genuinely seeking a deal.

Hamas Blames Netanyahu for Sabotage
Hamas has accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of deliberately stalling ceasefire and hostage negotiations. The group claims that Netanyahu’s demand for Israeli military control over the Philadelphi Corridor, along the Gaza-Egypt border, is preventing any agreement. They also warned that Netanyahu is using negotiations to extend the violence.

Ceasefire Deal Sticking Points
According to a senior U.S. official, two major issues remain unresolved: a prisoner exchange and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Philadelphi Corridor. While 90% of the deal has been agreed upon, the prisoner exchange has been a frustrating point, with Hamas using the recent killing of six hostages, including an American-Israeli, to pressure negotiations.

Rocket Attacks from Lebanon
Around 95 projectiles were fired from Lebanon into northern Israel on Wednesday, sparking fires but no reported injuries. Hezbollah confirmed responsibility for several attacks, prompting Israeli forces to retaliate by targeting Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon.

Netanyahu Defends Position
Prime Minister Netanyahu reaffirmed that Israel’s troops must remain in the Philadelphi Corridor to ensure the release of the hostages. He argued that any withdrawal would diminish Israel’s leverage and prevent the recovery of the remaining 101 hostages.

Hamas Threatens Further Hostage Deaths
Hamas issued a warning that continued Israeli aggression could result in more hostages being killed, tying Netanyahu’s leadership to their fate. The group stated, “Every day Netanyahu remains in power could mean another coffin.”

Gaza Polio Vaccination Effort
More than 187,000 children in central Gaza have received polio vaccinations as part of a campaign supported by the WHO, with plans to expand into southern Gaza.

Protests in Israel
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum organized demonstrations outside the homes of Israeli ministers, urging the government to secure a deal for the release of hostages.
