Israeli Airstrike Kills Hamas Police Chief and Deputy in Gaza, 11 Dead Including Civilians
In a tragic turn of events in Gaza, Israeli airstrikes have claimed the lives of two high-ranking Hamas officials. The Hamas-run Interior Ministry confirmed the deaths of Mahmoud Salah, the chief of Hamas police forces, and his deputy Hussam Shahwan, in a strike on January 2. The airstrike hit a central Gaza tent, reportedly used to shelter displaced families in the al-Mawasi area, just west of Khan Younis. The attack, which also resulted in the deaths of 11 other civilians and left at least 15 others injured, marks a significant moment in the ongoing conflict.
The two Hamas officers were reportedly killed while serving their roles in the police force. Salah, who had served for 30 years, was recently appointed to lead the police force six years ago. The Interior Ministry condemned the attack, stating that both officials were performing their national and humanitarian duties when they lost their lives. According to Hamas, the police force has a vital role in protecting civilians, providing services, and aiding people during the ongoing crisis.
Israeli military officials confirmed the death of Shahwan but refrained from commenting on the death of Salah. They also accused Shahwan of using civilian areas as cover, claiming he was hiding within a humanitarian zone, a region designated by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) for civilian protection. According to Israel, Shahwan had a history of abusing Gazan civilians during interrogations and was reportedly responsible for overseeing attacks against Israeli troops. The IDF further clarified that efforts were made to minimize civilian casualties before executing the strike.
The situation highlights the increasingly dangerous dynamics in Gaza, with both sides blaming each other for civilian suffering. The Israeli military repeatedly accuses Hamas of exploiting civilian spaces and using human shields, while Hamas maintains that Israeli strikes are targeting humanitarian areas, further deepening the humanitarian crisis.
Medical sources have reported significant casualties from the airstrike, with many of the victims being women and children. The ongoing conflict continues to cause devastation across the Gaza Strip, leaving thousands displaced and injured.
