JD Vance Meets PM Modi in Delhi, Launches India-U.S. COMPACT and Boosts Trade Talks
In a significant diplomatic development that underscores the growing strategic partnership between India and the United States, U.S. Vice President JD Vance met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his official visit to India. The high-profile meeting took place in New Delhi on the first day of Vance’s four-day visit, marking a new chapter in the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two democratic giants. Vice President Vance, who was accompanied by his family, expressed deep admiration for Prime Minister Modi, describing him as a “great leader” and expressing heartfelt gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to his family at the Prime Minister’s residence. In a tweet responding to Modi’s post about the meeting, Vance stated, “It was an honor to see Prime Minister Modi this evening. He’s a great leader and he was incredibly kind to my family. I look forward to working under President Trump’s leadership to strengthen our friendship and cooperation with the people of India.”
Prime Minister Modi welcomed Vance and his family warmly and expressed satisfaction over the progress made since his recent visit to the United States and his discussions with President Trump. Modi noted that both nations are committed to deepening cooperation across multiple domains, including trade, technology, defence, energy, and people-to-people exchanges. Highlighting the comprehensive nature of the talks, the leaders announced the launch of a major new initiative: the India-U.S. COMPACT (Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) for the 21st Century. This strategic framework aims to enhance cooperation based on mutual trust, shared interests, and the strong bonds between the peoples of both nations.
A central focus of the discussions was the advancement of trade relations. Vice President Vance and Prime Minister Modi confirmed that the Terms of Reference for the U.S.-India Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) negotiations have been finalized. This marks a critical step forward in formalizing a new trade agreement designed to foster job creation, enhance citizen well-being, and promote balanced growth. According to a statement from the U.S. Vice President’s office, the BTA aims to deepen bilateral trade and improve supply-chain integration in a mutually beneficial way. It is envisioned as a forward-looking agreement that aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Amrit Kaal’ vision for India and President Trump’s goal of a ‘Golden Age for America’. The initiative is expected to unlock new avenues for growth, especially for workers, farmers, and entrepreneurs on both sides.
Vice President Vance’s visit to India includes stops in Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra, with his departure scheduled for the early morning of April 24. The timing of this visit—following a successful Modi-Trump meeting in Washington—adds further momentum to the already accelerating relationship between the two countries. As both nations look to the future, this visit and the resulting agreements signal a shared commitment to a robust, collaborative partnership that can shape regional and global dynamics in the years to come.
