JD(U) Denies Breaking Ties with BJP in Manipur, Relieves State Unit Chief for Unilateral Decision

Janata Dal (United), led by Nitish Kumar, has denied reports that it has severed ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Manipur. The controversy began when Kshetrimayum Biren Singh, the JD(U) state unit chief in Manipur, issued a letter declaring the withdrawal of support to the BJP-led government in the state. However, the JD(U) national leadership quickly clarified that the letter was written unilaterally by Singh, without any communication with the central leadership, and labeled the action as a breach of party discipline.

Rajeev Ranjan Prasad, a JD(U) national spokesperson, dismissed the reports as “baseless and misleading.” He emphasized that the Manipur unit had acted independently, without the approval or consultation of the central party leadership. The party took immediate action by relieving Kshetrimayum Biren Singh of his duties as the state unit chief. The spokesperson reiterated that the JD(U) will continue to support the BJP-led government in Manipur and maintain the alliance in the future.

The letter from the JD(U) Manipur unit, signed by its chief Ksh. Biren Singh, had announced that the party no longer supports the BJP-led government and that the lone JD(U) legislator, Md. Abdul Nasir, would now be treated as an opposition member in the state assembly. This led to confusion about the party’s stance on the BJP alliance in the state.

However, the JD(U) leadership’s response quickly put those rumors to rest. They clarified that the move by Singh was an individual decision, and the party remains committed to its support for the BJP-led government in Manipur. The central leadership of JD(U) has reaffirmed its commitment to the alliance and has urged members to follow the party’s guidance and discipline moving forward.

In the wake of the incident, JD(U) is sending a clear message that internal matters should be handled according to the party’s chain of command and not be acted upon unilaterally. As for the future of the alliance, JD(U) leadership has reassured its supporters that the collaboration with the BJP in Manipur will remain intact, maintaining stability in the state government’s functioning.
