The Supreme Court issued a serious warning stating that the SC will intervene and take necessary actions if the state and central government does not address the issue relating to the distressed video of two women who were paraded naked in the Manipur state, the suo motu cognisance of the incident was taken by the Supreme Court after the horrifying video of two women that went viral in the media.
On July 20, DY Chandrachud, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) took a significant step by inviting the Attorney General R Venkataramani and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to address the distressing matter. The Chief Justice of India said that, ‘the visuals which appeared in the media had disturbed the court deeply and that is why we called you here’, said by the CJI addressing the two senior law officers in the bench.
The Court remained itself as a platform to consistently adhere with the humanitarian issues and further to facilitate the restoration of peace in the state throughout the period of violence in Manipur and it created a trust among the state and central government to provide safety and security for the people who are affected by the ongoing violence in the state.
On behalf of the court, the Chief Justice of India asked the central and state government of Manipur to take action against the culprit or to step aside and allow the judiciary to take appropriate actions. Taking into consideration the ‘suo motu cognisance of the video’, the court made a statement about the matter as ‘an infraction of human rights and violation against the constitution of India’. The court said in its order that making use of women as a tool to commit violence is not acceptable in a democratic constitution.
Tushar Mehta has been representing various cases related to the violence in the Manipur government. During the hearing, the two law officers Mr. Venkataramani and Mr. Mehta assured the court that they will convey their concern duly over the distressing incident.
The Chief Justice warned the government by giving little time for them to take necessary actions. The court asked for a detailed report of the incident from the Central and state government saying that they are aware of the fact of the video which was back from May 4th or 5th.
Despite giving all the oral assurances, the board headed by the Chief Justice of India demanded the Central and state government to take immediate action against the disturbing incident. The next hearing for the suo motu case was fixed for 28th July 2023.
