Microsoft Fires Employee Vaniya Agrawal After Gaza Protest Against Company’s Ties With Israeli Military

In a bold and controversial move that has stirred significant attention both within the tech world and across global human rights communities, Microsoft has reportedly terminated two employees, including Indian American software engineer Vaniya Agrawal, for protesting the company’s business ties with the Israeli government. The incident took place on April 7 during a high-profile event celebrating Microsoft’s 50th anniversary, which featured CEO Satya Nadella alongside former Microsoft leaders Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer.

Vaniya Agrawal publicly disrupted the event to call out Microsoft’s alleged involvement in what she described as supporting genocide in Gaza through its technological partnerships with the Israeli military. Following the disruption, Agrawal and fellow former employee Ibtihal Aboussad shared a powerful open letter addressed to all Microsoft employees and leadership, including Nadella, via the online platform Medium. The letter, titled “Why I’m Leaving Microsoft — Our Moral Responsibility”, was published under the author profile ‘No Azure For Apartheid’, a campaign group composed of Microsoft workers demanding an end to the company’s Azure cloud services contracts with the Israeli government and military.

In her heartfelt and uncompromising letter, Vaniya Agrawal outlined her decision to leave Microsoft after 1.5 years, driven by what she sees as a moral imperative. She asserted that Israel has been committing genocide against Palestinians, citing decades of systemic violence and recent atrocities in Gaza, including the reported execution of paramedics and targeting of hospitals and schools. Agrawal accused Microsoft of complicity in these actions, referencing a $133 million contract between Microsoft and Israel’s Ministry of Defense, which, according to reports, helps power state surveillance, automated targeting systems, and military AI operations.

The letter further alleged that Microsoft Azure and AI technologies are foundational to Israel’s digital warfare infrastructure, describing Microsoft as “a digital weapons manufacturer” that enables “surveillance, apartheid, and genocide.” Agrawal stated that continued employment at the company equates to tacit support of these actions and emphasized that even employees not directly involved in Azure or AI contribute indirectly to the system by supporting the broader corporate structure.

She challenged Microsoft’s proclaimed mission to “empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more,” questioning which people are being empowered when the technology fuels oppression and violence. Agrawal also criticized the company’s corporate censorship after her protest, noting that Microsoft quickly blocked replies, forwards, and reactions to the original email she sent, despite it receiving hundreds of supportive responses initially.

The letter concluded with a strong call to action for current Microsoft employees. Agrawal urged her former colleagues to sign the No Azure for Apartheid petition, speak out against the company’s military contracts, and educate their peers about Microsoft’s alleged role in global conflicts. She emphasized that Microsoft’s own human rights policies protect employees from retaliation when raising ethical concerns and encouraged others to use their voices to demand change from within.

This high-profile protest and subsequent firing have sparked widespread debate about corporate responsibility, freedom of speech within tech companies, and the ethics of business relationships in conflict zones. It also brings renewed scrutiny to the role of Big Tech in global military operations, particularly concerning artificial intelligence and cloud computing technologies.
