“Mob Loots Police Van in Manipur Amid Escalating Violence and Arms Theft”

According to the FIR, a mob broke through an armory door and the police used 327 rounds of gunfire and 20 teargas bombs trying to stop the looting, but it was all in vain. On August 3, a mob looted the police armory in a new case of arms theft in Manipur. At the other Indian Reserve Battalion at Narasena, there was a robbery in the morning.

The attack took place in the morning, the FIR alleged that “Around 09.45 a.m, a large number of armed miscreants individuals came by some 40/45 light vehicles and around 500 overpowered on foot numbering the guards of main gate & Quarter Guar.”

The Supreme Court is now hearing cases relating to the recent violence in Manipur. Concerned with the condition of violence and the near absence of law and order, it called the state DGP for a personal appearance, which will take place today.

Modern weapons, such as AF rifles, INSAS rifles, LMGs, pistols, carbines, detonators, spare barrels, pistols, GF rifles, mortars, tear gas guns, AMOGHs, SLR rifles, magazines of various guns and rifles, and a few other weapons and ammunition are among the weapons stolen. The FIR said that the mob forced their way in.

Since the ethnic war began on May 3, Manipur has experienced widespread looting of state armories. According to The Hindu, around 4,000 firearms and lakhs of rounds of ammunition have been looted till date, with only 1,600 weapons recovered.

We’ve had a couple of cases where weapons have been stolen. On several occasions, the state chief minister N. Biren Singh and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have asked people to hand over arms during their visits to the State in May. A BJP legislator even put up a drop box, asking people to surrender their weapons without any fear of retaliation from the government. Still, there’s very little recovery and the fact that we still have such a large stockpile of modern weapons makes returning to normal difficult.

On August 3, the state was rocked by a new outbreak of violence in the Bishnupur district, as the Kuki community prepared a mass funeral for those murdered in the riots. Despite the cancellation of the funeral, hundreds of Meitei women protested near the site where the burial was to take place. According to India Today, the RAF was fired in the air to defuse the situation, while Manipur police stood guard over the women. Although the exchange of fire from both sides ceased after a few moments. In the accident, a few women were injured. According to NDTV, violence occurred in Imphal West on Thursday, killing a police officer. A sniper shot him in the head.
