A multiparty delegation of 21 MPs from the Opposition’s ‘INDIA’ (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) met the Governor Anusuiya Uikey on 30 July 2023.
At a press conference, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury told reporters, “The governor herself expressed her sorrow. We presented her with what we had seen over the previous two days, and she offered her support. She also suggested talking to Kuki, Meitei or any of the other communities in searching for a solution. She said that an all party delegation should be invited to Manipur and meet with leaders in every community, as this atmosphere of mistrust needs to be conveyed by everyone at the same time.” In addition to this, a letter was sent by the MPs to the Governor requesting for the peace and normalcy to be restored in the country.
One of the two ladies who were paraded naked and subjected to sexual assault by a mob in Manipur on May 4 was among those they met, TMC MP Sushmita Dev had previously informed PTI, as well as her mother. Dev explained that the latter’s only plea was to assist her in seeing at least the bodies of her kid and husband, who were murdered in the tragedy. At their meeting, Dev stated that they will discuss this with the Governor. Chowdhury had made it clear that they weren’t in the state to do politics as the ethnic conflict in Manipur had damaged India’s image on Saturday. We’ve come here to meet the victims of ethnic conflicts and figure out what is going on. We’re looking for an end to violence and restoration of peace in Manipur as soon as possible, the whole world is watching what’s happening there,” he said.
A memo was submitted by the INDIA – ALLIANCE’s MP to the Governor, where they said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence was an indication of his “brazen indifference” situation in the North East, that pointed out government machinery highlighting the incomplete control of the government machinery over the Manipur ethnic conflict. To allow the Union government to intervene in the Manipur violence and to restore peace and normality that has been completely disturbed in Manipur over the last three months.
The document emphasized that almost 140 died, 500 injured, more than 5,000 houses burned down and nearly 60,000 people had suffered due to the failure of central and state governments in safeguarding the lives and property of the people in Manipur.
