PhD must if you teach in a college or university

PhD is a must if you teach in a college or university from 2021 . One of the most important profession,Teaching. Teaching is the first stage of life for an individual where he/she Learns how things are. Being in this profession means being a guide for others. As much as people want to opt teaching as their profession they also have to meet some criteria.

From July 2021,it will be mandatory for any person who is in a teaching position in Universities to be a PhD holder. A PhD degree has been made compulsory eligibility criteria for being a University professor from the upcoming year. This was announced by the Human Resource Development Minister of India Prakash javadekar.

There is a systematic way of assessing/ evaluating A teachers performance. Academic Performance Indicator (API) was used to do so but after the new regulation it has risen several debates. The Government also informed that the Academic Performance Indicator (API) will be replaced by a new Simplified Teacher Evaluation Grading System. The new simplified teacher evaluation grading system will also be considering research scores for Universities which will help in improving the overall University research output.

Those wanting to be an assistant professor in college will need to have a Master’s Degree along with NET (National Eligibility Test). Even a PhD holder will fulfill the criteria. The new regulations are a part of the new University Grants Commission regulation . The main aim of this regulation is to have talented and best teaching faculties. The new regulation also looks into the working hours of assistant professors as they can have a relaxed number of working hours provided they indulge themselves in the research activity.

This is to retain the best quality professors and Academic Staff in colleges and Universities. Universities within the state will have research clusters created. Faculties, skills and infrastructure will be shared as it enables optimal utilisation of resources.

Special provision has been undertaken in order to make direct recruitment of assistant professors. According to the regulation any PhD holder from top 500 global ranking universities or institutions can be directly recruited as assistant professor. This regulation which is applicable from 2021 has made one month compulsory induction programme for the newly recruited assistant professors in Universities and colleges and Higher Education Institutions. This is to give them a complete introduction as well as training for their jobs. Under the career advancement scheme, Upto 10% of the existing sanctioned professors will be made senior professors through the promotion and direct recruitment.

There were no changes made regarding incentive to teachers . The Government retained the 2010 regulations and subsequent amendments which deals with providing incentives to teachers.
