On Saturday, President Droupadi Murmu received the Grand-Collar of the Order of Timor-Leste, the highest civilian award of the Southeast Asian nation.
President José Ramos-Horta of Timor-Leste bestowed the prestigious honor on President Murmu, recognizing her significant contributions to public service, particularly in the areas of education, social welfare, and the empowerment of women. The Rashtrapati Bhavan shared the news in a social media post on X, highlighting the award’s significance.
Expressing her gratitude, President Murmu stated that the award symbolizes the strong bonds of friendship between India and Timor-Leste.
President Murmu, currently on a three-nation tour, arrived in Timor-Leste earlier today, following her visits to Fiji and New Zealand. In a special gesture, she was warmly welcomed at the airport by President José Ramos-Horta.
During her visit, President Murmu engaged in comprehensive discussions with President Ramos-Horta, focusing on the strong democratic connection between the two nations and exploring opportunities for enhanced bilateral cooperation.
Earlier, during her stay in Fiji, President Murmu was also honored with the country’s highest civilian award, the ‘Companion of the Order of Fiji.’ She acknowledged this recognition as a testament to the enduring friendship between India and Fiji.
