Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a rally in Telangana’s Nizamabad, revealed that Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) had approached him in December 2020, seeking the induction of the Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). However, PM Modi disclosed that he had refused the request, citing KCR’s actions as the reason for declining the alliance.
In his speech, PM Modi recounted the meeting with KCR, stating that the Telangana Chief Minister had approached him with humility and requested the BRS’s inclusion in the NDA. KCR had sought support from the BJP in the Hyderabad municipal body in exchange for his party’s support in the alliance.
PM Modi stated, “KCR needed support in the Hyderabad municipal body. He came with a fancy shawl and gave me a lot of respect…which was quite uncharacteristic of KCR. Then, he said the country is progressing under you and we also want to be part of the NDA and induct us. In return, he wanted help in the municipal body. I told him that your acts are such that Modi cannot join with you and refused him entry into the NDA as well as to help him in any way.”
Quoting PM Modi’s speech, news agency ANI reported on social media, “When BJP won 48 seats in the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation election, KCR needed support. Before this election, he used to welcome me at the airport, but later suddenly he stopped doing so. After the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation elections, KCR came to meet me in Delhi and said that he wanted to join NDA. He also asked me to extend support to him. I told him (KCR) that due to his deeds Modi cannot be associated with him.”
PM Modi further emphasized that KCR’s party had approached him for support following the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) polls in 2020 when the BRS fell short of a majority by 21 seats. The BJP had secured 48 seats out of 150, surpassing its performance in the previous 2015 polls.
During the Nizamabad rally, Prime Minister Modi criticized the KCR-led government for not fulfilling promises made to Telangana’s farmers. He assured turmeric farmers in Nizamabad that their product would be promoted, and a National Turmeric Board would be established. PM Modi stated, “The BRS government has broken all their promises made to the farmers of Telangana. But in the last few years, we transferred around Rs 10,000 crores into the bank accounts of 40 lakh farmers. Under the ‘One District, One Product scheme,’ Turmeric produced in the Nizamabad district is being promoted. As per our promises to the turmeric farmers, the National Turmeric Board will be formed.”
The revelation of KCR’s request and PM Modi’s refusal to include the BRS in the NDA marks a significant development in Telangana’s political landscape as both parties continue to navigate their respective positions.
