The government has announced that 2,100 tribal students will receive training in chip technology at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs, in partnership with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru, is set to train 2,100 tribal students in semiconductor technology over the next three years. The initiative will offer basic training to 1,500 students and advanced training to 600 students. This program, named Semiconductor Fabrication & Characterization Training for Students from Tribal Communities, falls under the central sector scheme Tribal Research Information, Education, Communication, and Events (TRI-ECE) for the fiscal year 2023-24.

Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs, Durgadas Uikey, confirmed that the training will be conducted at the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering at IISc. The program will provide NSQF-certified level 6.0 and 6.5 training in semiconductor technology. Eligible participants must hold a degree in engineering.

Additionally, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has established six large nano centres, including one at IISc, to facilitate semiconductor technology training. These centres include representation from tribal communities in line with reservation policies.
