Violence continues to ravage Gaza despite the efforts of mediators to broker a ceasefire.

Despite hopes for an imminent ceasefire, violence continues in the Gaza Strip. On Saturday, an Israeli airstrike targeted a house and an adjacent warehouse, killing at least 18 people from the same family. This attack came after the Health Ministry in Hamas-run Gaza reported that the death toll from the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict had exceeded 40,000. The strike occurred just after U.S., Egyptian, and Qatari officials wrapped up two days of negotiations, expressing optimism about a potential ceasefire agreement.

The airstrike hit a residential area in Zawaida, where over 40 civilians were taking shelter. The casualties included Sami Jawad al-Ejlah, a wholesaler who coordinated with the Israeli military to supply Gaza with meat and fish, along with his family and other relatives. The Israeli military has confirmed ongoing operations against militants in Gaza but has not commented specifically on this strike.

In response to continued hostilities, the Israeli military has issued new evacuation orders for central Gaza and is conducting operations in response to rocket fire from Palestinian groups. Approximately 84% of Gaza’s territory is under evacuation orders.

The conflict, which began on October 7 with a Hamas-led attack, has led to significant casualties on both sides. Efforts for a ceasefire have been complicated by recent regional tensions, including potential retaliation from Iran and Hezbollah. Despite attempts to mediate a three-phase agreement involving hostages, a ceasefire, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces, Hamas has expressed skepticism about the current proposal.

Diplomats continue to work towards a resolution, with new meetings scheduled between Egyptian and Israeli officials to discuss withdrawal mechanisms. International diplomatic efforts include meetings between French and British officials and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who is expected to visit Israel.
