Viral False Claim Circulates About UN Report Alleging India’s Role in 72.3% of Terror Activities in Asia

Viral Claims Falsely Allege UN Report States India Behind 72.3% of Terror Activities in Asia

A viral claim circulating on social media platforms falsely alleges that a 2024 United Nations (UN) report has identified India as being responsible for 72.3% of terrorist activities in Asia. However, fact-checking by BOOM has found no evidence to support this assertion. There is no official UN report, statement, or credible news source that validates this claim.

The claim, widely shared on platforms like X, reads, “UN 2024 research report declares India involved in 72.3% of the terrorist activities in Asia.” However, an extensive search of the official websites of the UN Security Council and the Union Home Ministry yielded no such report. Furthermore, leading news sources have not published any reports supporting this claim.

Contrary to these viral posts, reports from reputable news outlets such as The Hindu and The Indian Express in February 2025 cite the UN’s 35th Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team report, which does mention India’s security situation but does not attribute any major terrorist activities to the country. The report states that ISIL (Da’esh) was unable to mount large-scale attacks in India. However, it notes that ISIL handlers attempted to provoke lone-wolf attacks through India-based sympathizers. Additionally, it highlights the pro-ISIL propaganda efforts of Al-Jauhar Media, which continued to disseminate anti-India rhetoric through its publication Serat ul-Haq.

Further analysis of global terrorism data refutes the viral claim. The 2025 Global Terrorism Index (GTI), released by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) on March 5, 2025, ranks India 14th in terms of the impact of terrorism. The report identifies Burkina Faso as the most terrorism-affected country in 2024, with other nations such as Pakistan, Syria, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Somalia, Israel, Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Iraq ranking higher than India. While India remains among the top 15 countries most affected by terrorism, the GTI categorizes the nation under the ‘high’ threat level, rather than suggesting it is responsible for terrorist activities.

The report further states that there was an increase in terrorist attacks in 2024 compared to 2023. However, the countries where the most attacks remained unattributed to any specific group were Pakistan, Mali, and India. The GTI ranks 163 countries by assessing four key factors over a five-year period: the number of terrorist incidents, fatalities, injuries, and hostages, with fatalities carrying the highest weightage in determining rankings.

Given these findings, the viral claim suggesting that a UN report blames India for 72.3% of terrorism in Asia is entirely false. There is no factual basis for this misinformation, and users are advised to rely on credible sources for accurate information.
