The monsoon is in full swing, bringing heavy rainfall to much of India. Delhi experienced intense downpours on Friday, leading to severe waterlogging in various parts of the capital. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued showers for the Delhi-NCR region in the coming days.
According to the IMD, Delhi-NCR can expect a generally cloudy sky with light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms over the next 3-4 days.
24 Dead in Rain-Related Incidents in Tripura
Incessant rainfall has caused severe disruption in Tripura, with the death toll rising to 24 due to flooding, landslides, and other rain-related incidents as of Friday evening. The situation is expected to worsen, as the IMD has predicted very heavy rainfall over the state for the next 6-7 days. A red alert has been issued for Tripura on August 25, warning of extremely heavy rainfall.
Disaster Management Secretary Brijesh Pandey, during a press conference, reported that the rains have inflicted extensive damage on roads, power infrastructure, agriculture, properties, and livestock, with estimated losses around Rs 5,000 crore. Approximately 1,28,000 people have sought refuge in 558 relief camps across the state.
IMD Issues Red Alert for Gujarat
The IMD has also issued a red alert for Gujarat, warning of extremely heavy rainfall expected from August 24 to August 27. Particularly severe rains are anticipated in Saurashtra and Kutch on August 26 and 27.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected over Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Gangetic West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, Mizoram, and Manipur on August 24, 2024.
