UDF Sweeps Kerala Election 2026 with 102 Seats as BJP Kept Out from South Power

The 2026 Kerala assembly election has ended with a massive victory for the Congress led United Democratic Front or UDF. In a state known for its alternating power structure the UDF has secured a thumping majority by winning 102 seats out of 140. This decisive mandate marks the end of a decade of rule by the Left Democratic Front led by Pinarayi Vijayan. The victory of the UDF was felt across the state with the Congress party alone winning 63 seats. The voters have clearly signaled a desire for change after 13 out of 21 LDF ministers were defeated in their respective constituencies. This wave has brought the Congress back to power in a third southern state joining Karnataka and Telangana.

While the UDF celebrates the BJP has once again found itself out of the power race in South India despite making a breakthrough. The BJP managed to win 3 seats in the Kerala assembly marking a significant development for the party in a traditionally bipolar contest. However with only 3 members in the house they remain a minor player compared to the two main fronts. The results confirm that the Southern Wall remains largely intact against the BJP as the majority of the electorate continues to prefer regional or traditional national alliances. The BJP gains are noteworthy but not enough to challenge the dominant political narrative of the state.

The downfall of the LDF was marked by the defeat of prominent ministers showing a deep seated anger among the voters. Even Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan faced a tough battle in Dharmadam reflecting the overall trend against the ruling coalition. The UDF successfully focused on economic issues and governance which resonated with the educated population of Kerala. The leadership of V D Satheesan provided a stable alternative that the people were ready to trust. This victory has not only brought the Congress back to power but has also seen historic milestones such as Fathima Thahiliya becoming the first woman MLA from the IUML.

As the UDF prepares to form the next government they will have to deal with a severe financial situation and high public expectations. Managing state debt while continuing the social welfare schemes that Kerala is famous for will be a significant challenge for the new administration. The demand for better job opportunities and infrastructure remains high among the youth. For the LDF this is a time for serious introspection while for the BJP it is a sign that their growth in the south is slow and incremental. Kerala has chosen its path and it is one that keeps the state firmly under the leadership of the Congress led alliance.
