Delhi Police Detention of AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar Triggers Political Conflict

By Raju Saha 20/8/2026

Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal raised concerns regarding law enforcement actions after Delhi Police placed Kondli legislator Kuldeep Kumar into preventive custody. Addressing the Prime Minister directly through a public statement, Kejriwal alleged that plainclothes officers arrived at the lawmaker's residence during early morning hours and removed him without providing immediate official clarification regarding his location or legal status. The party leadership further claimed that security camera equipment and recording hardware were confiscated from the premise during the police intervention.

The legal escalation stems from a localized protest concerning the death of an on-duty municipal sanitation worker, identified as Anil, in the Kalyanpuri area. Sanitation workers and local unions assembled at Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital to demand financial relief amounting to 1 crore for the surviving family alongside permanent employment guarantees for a family member. Kuldeep Kumar joined the demonstration to support the municipal workers' requests, urging state administrative figures to meet with representatives of the deceased worker.

Following the morning detention, senior party officials announced plans to approach the Delhi High Court with a habeas corpus petition to establish the whereabouts of the elected representative. AAP Delhi unit president Saurabh Bharadwaj accused authorities of using force to disperse the gathering sanitation workers and pressuring the family regarding funeral arrangements. Party leaders emphasized that law enforcement agencies must maintain procedural transparency when taking public representatives into custody during civil demonstrations.

During subsequent proceedings before the Delhi High Court, legal representatives for the state confirmed that the Kondli legislator had been placed under temporary preventive detention to manage public order surrounding the hospital protest. Police officials informed the court panel that the detention ended during the late afternoon, confirming that the lawmaker was released from custody following the stabilization of local demonstrations.
