India achieved a historic milestone at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, securing 29 medals, including seven gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze, surpassing their previous best of 19 medals at the Tokyo 2020 Games. This accomplishment also propelled India’s overall Paralympic medal tally beyond 50.
From August 28 to September 8, a record 84 Indian paralympians competed in 12 disciplines, more than the nine they participated in during Tokyo 2020. Indian athletes also made their debut in three new sports: para-cycling, para-rowing, and blind judo.
One of the standout performances came from Avani Lekhara, who became the first Indian woman to win two gold medals at the Paralympics. She not only defended her title in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 but also set a new world record.

She set a world record in the ranking round and went on to win a silver medal in individual competition. Alongside Rakesh Kumar, she also set a new world record in the compound mixed team event and won bronze, making her India’s youngest Paralympic medallist at just 17 years old.
In another notable achievement, Harvinder Singh became India’s first-ever Paralympic archery champion, cementing his name in the history books and contributing to India’s record-breaking success at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.
