Sonam Wangchuk Hunger Strike Enters Day 2 As Abhijeet Dipke Condemns Government Silence Over NEET Student Deaths

The national capital is witnessing a major political and social demonstration as the ongoing protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi entered its 10th consecutive day on June 29, 2026. Led by the founder of the Cockroach Janta Party, Abhijeet Dipke, the demonstration has become a central point for student anger following massive nationwide irregularities in competitive examinations, particularly the NEET examination. The core demand of the gathering remains the immediate resignation of the Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, who faces intense criticism for failing to maintain the integrity of national level tests. The situation turned highly critical when the well known climate and education activist Sonam Wangchuk joined the site to begin an indefinite hunger strike, which has now successfully entered its 2nd day. The gathering has drawn 100s of students, civil society members, and multiple farmer leaders who are demanding complete institutional transparency and structural changes in how examinations are administered across the country.

The emotional weight of the protest increased significantly when Abhijeet Dipke publicly named several young students, including Pradeep Meghwal, Aakansha Chaturvedi, Amaira Kumar, and Kahaan Patel, who tragically lost their lives to suicide due to the immense pressure and confusion caused by the recent examination crisis. The father of Kahaan Patel, a NEET aspirant who passed away on June 18, 2026, traveled all the way from Gujarat to Jantar Mantar to seek answers directly from the authorities. Activists have heavily criticized the ruling administration for its complete lack of empathy, highlighting that no official representative has reached out to these grieving families to offer a formal apology or regret. The structural failure of the testing system was highlighted further when the Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test, scheduled for late June 2026, was called off at the last minute after an inter state syndicate leaked the question paper, leading to the immediate arrest of 3 individuals in Bhiwandi. This repeated breakdown of exam security at both the state and central levels has left over 1000000s of students facing a dark and uncertain future.

The movement gained massive momentum when Sonam Wangchuk joined forces with the students after declaring that he would fast indefinitely if the government refused to address either the educational crisis or the long pending environmental and administrative demands of Ladakh. On Day 2 of his hunger strike, which started on June 28, 2026, after paying respects at Rajghat, Sonam Wangchuk made a direct appeal to citizens across the country to observe a 1 day fast in solidarity with the movement. However, the organizers have alleged that the administration is using heavy handed tactics to suppress the peaceful assembly. The group reported that the Delhi Police cut off basic water supply and sanitation facilities at the protest site immediately after the indefinite fast was announced, even refusing to allow a portable toilet facility despite the advanced age and health vulnerabilities of the fasting activist. Furthermore, reports indicate that several farmer leaders from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh were placed under house arrest to prevent them from traveling to New Delhi to support the agitation.

The severe crisis highlights a deeper breakdown of communication between the governing elite and the young citizens of the nation. While the top leadership remains focused on public relations exercises and regular radio broadcasts like Mann Ki Baat, the actual ground reality reflects a deep systemic rot where families are left to beg for basic justice. The transformation of this movement from a digital satirical group into a serious multi day physical sit in shows that public patience with bureaucratic incompetence has completely run out. Even though 6 students from the All India Students Association have set up a parallel stage to continue their hunger strike, the core message remains unified across all factions. By failing to hold top officials accountable for the leaks, the government risks permanently destroying public trust in India's educational institutions. Until the central ministry enforces strict criminal penalties against paper leak syndicates and opens a direct channel of communication with the student community, the political costs for the ruling alliance will continue to climb.
