Thousands Join Mumbai Protest Demanding Resignation of Chief Election Commissioner as Over 700 Detained in Delhi

Massive public demonstrations took place in Mumbai and New Delhi as thousands of citizens, students, and political workers came together to demand the immediate resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner. The coordinated protests were organized to raise serious concerns over the fairness of democratic processes and to question the working of the Election Commission of India. Large crowds gathered across prominent public spaces to voice their anger and call for complete transparency in the electoral system.

In Mumbai, thousands of people joined a massive rally organized by Citizens for Justice and Peace, filling city streets with banners and raising slogans against the poll panel leadership. Demonstrators from civil society groups, legal circles, and youth forums gathered peacefully to express growing dissatisfaction with how recent elections and voter lists have been handled. Protesters argued that faith in independent institutions is essential for democracy and insisted that the head of the election body must step down to ensure accountability.

The situation became tense in the national capital as Delhi Police carried out mass detentions to break up planned gatherings near the election authority headquarters. Security personnel were deployed in large numbers across central areas to stop demonstrators from marching forward. Police officers stopped rallies, set up barricades, and placed more than 700 protesters under formal custody from Jantar Mantar and surrounding avenues.

Among those taken away by law enforcement authorities in Delhi was former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, alongside numerous senior party workers, student activists, and local volunteers. Eyewitness accounts showed police personnel moving in to pack protesters into buses as they attempted to carry out peaceful demonstrations. Detainees were transferred to multiple police stations situated across different parts of the city to clear the sensitive central zone.

Political opposition parties expressed strong outrage against the police action, describing the detentions as an attempt to silence democratic dissent. Leaders from the Communist Party of India Marxist issued a formal statement condemning the heavy-handed treatment and detention of young activists and students in Delhi. Party representatives maintained that peaceful protest is a constitutional right, criticizing the central administration for using police force rather than answering legitimate questions raised about the conduct of elections.

Civil rights advocates and community organizers emphasized that public demonstrations were triggered by growing complaints regarding election machinery, voter verification processes, and institutional independence. Protesters pointed out that when citizens raise genuine doubts about voting fairness, the regulatory body should address those concerns through open communication rather than administrative crackdowns and police detentions.

The widespread demonstrations in Mumbai and Delhi reflect intensifying political tension across the country over the credibility of public institutions. Legal groups and opposition parties have declared that peaceful rallies will continue across several state capitals until the election authority provides clear answers to the issues raised by the public.
