Hyderabad Kuki Student Group Demands Impartial Probe Into Tragic Manipur Church Leaders Killings
A massive wave of public grief and political outrage has emerged in Hyderabad following the brutal killing of three prominent Kuki church leaders in Manipur. Over two hundred members of the Kuki community, including students, church officials, and local supporters, gathered at the Centenary Baptist Church in Secunderabad to organize a solemn condolence meet and candlelight vigil. Organized by the Kuki Students Organisation Hyderabad, the assembly paid rich tributes to the deceased spiritual leaders, describing them as dedicated pillars of peace who risked their lives to bring stability to the violence hit state. The victims, identified as Reverend Vumthang Sitlhou, Pastor Kaigoulun Lhouvum, and Pastor Paogoulen Sitlhou, were ambushed and fired upon near Saheibung Peak while traveling back to Kangpokpi district after attending an ecclesiastical convention in Churachandpur. The unexpected attack resulted in three immediate fatalities and left four other co travelers severely injured, sending shockwaves through tribal communities nationwide.
During the gathering, student representatives and community elders strongly condemned the ambush, characterizing it as a cowardly act of terror targeted directly at unarmed spiritual guides. The Kuki Students Organisation Hyderabad pointedly accused the Kamson faction of the Zeliangrong United Front, allegedly operating with strategic backing from the National Socialist Council of Nagaland Isak Muivah, of executing the targeted assault. The student group expressed deep frustration over what they termed as deliberate media indifference regarding the volatile security scenario in Northeast India, which has compelled student bodies and civil rights organizations to stage protests outside their home states. The primary demand put forward by the demonstrators is for the central government to hand over the entire case to the National Investigation Agency to ensure a transparent, time bound, and completely impartial investigation that can expose the armed actors responsible for the bloodshed.
The targeted killings carry heavy geopolitical implications because the victims were actively involved in running delicate peace negotiations between different tribal factions. Reverend Vumthang Sitlhou, who previously served as the general secretary of the Manipur Baptist Convention, had recently led an important delegation to Kohima to defuse growing tensions between the Kuki and Tangkhul Naga communities that had escalated earlier this year. Various Naga organizations, including the United Naga Council and the Liangmai Naga Katimai Ruangdi, have vehemently rejected the allegations, claiming that the accusations are completely baseless and arguing that internal community disputes might have led to the tragic ambush. Meanwhile, federal security agencies have suggested that the incident could potentially be an unfortunate case of mistaken identity in a highly active conflict zone, noting that the assailants might not have realized that religious leaders were traveling inside the targeted vehicles.
This tragic development demonstrates how deep rooted ethnic hostilities can weaponize public spaces and derail fragile peace initiatives within a deeply fractured state ecosystem. From a broader perspective, the direct targeting of the clergy marks a dangerous escalation in the long standing regional conflict, moving the violence from active militant clashes to the systemic elimination of neutral peace brokers. The fact that tribal student groups are organizing major rallies in external urban centers like Hyderabad highlights the complete lack of faith in local state machinery and local state police units. While state authorities have promised to cover the medical costs of the survivors and restore public order, the deep suspicion between the Kuki and Naga factions is likely to intensify, proving that true stability cannot be achieved through routine police deployment unless deep rooted institutional distrust and armed insurgent dominance are systematically dismantled.
