Massive Fire Erupts at Delhi’s Azadpur Mandi, Asia’s Largest Vegetable Market

In a devastating incident, a massive fire broke out at Azadpur Mandi, Delhi’s largest vegetable wholesale market, on Friday evening. The blaze, which ignited at approximately 5:20 pm, sent plumes of smoke billowing into the sky and created an alarming scene. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties have been reported thus far.

Promptly responding to the emergency, at least 11 fire tenders were dispatched to the site to battle the flames. Their valiant efforts ultimately brought the fire under control within the span of an hour, by 6:30 pm.

Azadpur Mandi, often referred to as the “lifeline” of the national capital’s food supply chain, plays a pivotal role in determining the prices of fruits and vegetables across northern India. It stands as Asia’s largest wholesale vegetable market, known for its sheer volume and the constant flow of fresh produce being transported in and out of its premises via hundreds of trucks daily.

As rescue operations continue, the cause of the fire remains unknown and is currently under investigation. Authorities are working diligently to assess the extent of the damage inflicted upon this vital hub of the city’s food distribution network.

This incident follows a recent fire outbreak at a Paying Guest (PG) facility for women in the Mukherjee Nagar neighborhood of Delhi. Thankfully, no casualties were reported in that incident, which occurred just days before the Azadpur Mandi fire.
