Hyderabad Police have achieved a major breakthrough in the sensational murder case of Tanuja Ranjan, wife of retired senior IPS officer Vinay Ranjan Ray. The main accused, Nepalese maid Kalpana, was arrested from Pune on Monday, May 11, 2026. Kalpana was apprehended while she was staying at her sister’s house in Pune. The arrest came just a few days after the shocking incident that took place in the upscale Prashasan Nagar area of Jubilee Hills.

According to police, Kalpana had been working at the retired IPS officer’s house for the past several months. On the night of May 8, she allegedly colluded with two or more accomplices to carry out the crime. The group allegedly overpowered and killed Tanuja Ranjan by choking or smothering her before looting gold jewellery and cash from the house. The former IPS officer was away in Bengaluru at the time of the incident. CCTV footage reportedly captured Kalpana and one of her accomplices, which helped police in their investigation. After committing the crime, Kalpana and her gang fled the city, prompting Hyderabad Police to form multiple teams to track them down.

The murder sent shockwaves across Hyderabad, especially in high-security residential areas. Top police officials, including DGP CV Anand and Hyderabad Commissioner of Police Sajjanar, visited the crime scene and monitored the case closely. Police suspect the murder was not spontaneous but a well-planned conspiracy. They have warned citizens to be careful while hiring domestic help, especially from outside the state. Special teams are still searching for the remaining absconding accused linked to the Nepali gang. Kalpana is being brought back to Hyderabad for further interrogation and legal proceedings.

This case has once again highlighted concerns about background verification of domestic workers in big cities. Many residents in Hyderabad are now reviewing the security of their households. Police investigations are ongoing to recover the stolen valuables and identify the full network behind the crime. The swift arrest of Kalpana has brought some relief to the victim’s family, though the pain of losing a loved one remains. The incident serves as a reminder for everyone to remain vigilant and verify the credentials of household staff thoroughly. Hyderabad Police continue to appeal to the public for any information that can help nab the remaining accused.
