Infosys, one of India’s leading IT giants, has been a beacon of innovation since its founding in 1981 by a team of visionaries—Narayan Murthy, NS Raghavan, Ashok Arora, Nandan Nilekani, SD Shibulal, K Dinesh, and Senapathy Gopalakrishnan. From a modest beginning with ₹10,000 invested by Narayan Murthy’s wife, Sudha Murthy, the company now boasts revenues of $18.2 billion (approximately ₹1,51,762 crore) as of 2023.

While Narayan Murthy is often celebrated as the face of Infosys, Senapathy Gopalakrishnan has quietly carved his place as its wealthiest co-founder. With an estimated net worth of ₹38,500 crore, he has surpassed Murthy, who stands at ₹36,600 crore, as per recent evaluations.

A Visionary Leader

Gopalakrishnan’s leadership at Infosys was instrumental in its growth. As CEO and Managing Director from 2007 to 2011, he steered the company through significant milestones and global expansion. His subsequent role as Vice Chairman from 2011 to 2014 further solidified Infosys’s position as a leader in the IT industry.

Post-Infosys, Gopalakrishnan turned his attention to startups, becoming the Chairman of Axilor Ventures. Under his guidance, Axilor has invested in numerous promising ventures, including GoodHome, Cogoport, and EnKash, fostering the growth of innovative businesses.

Roots and Education

Born in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, Gopalakrishnan’s early academic brilliance laid a strong foundation for his career. After excelling at the Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School, he pursued advanced studies at IIT Madras, earning a master’s degree in Physics and Computer Science. His multidisciplinary education equipped him with the skills to navigate the complexities of technology and business.

Philanthropic Contributions

Gopalakrishnan, along with his wife, Sudha Gopalakrishnan, is deeply committed to philanthropy. Through their Pratiksha Trust, they have supported groundbreaking research in neuroscience and other scientific fields. Additionally, his active involvement with academic institutions like the Chennai Mathematical Institute and the IITs at Madras and Bangalore highlights his dedication to improving India’s education and research ecosystem.

Recognition and Legacy

In 2011, Gopalakrishnan was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honor, for his contributions to the IT sector and his efforts to give back to society.

The Richest Co-founder

Senapathy Gopalakrishnan’s journey from a founding member of Infosys to its wealthiest co-founder is a testament to his quiet determination and vision. His continued impact on startups, education, and philanthropy cements his legacy as a leader who has shaped both the corporate world and the broader community.
