UP MLC Election Results: BJP Retains Six Seats While Samajwadi Party Wins Key Varanasi Stronghold Ahead of 2027 Battle

The results of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections have brought mixed feelings across the state political landscape. Voting took place across eleven council constituencies, consisting of special seats reserved for registered school teachers and university graduates. When the counting of paper ballots finished, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party secured six seats, successfully maintaining its previous tally in the upper house. However, the opposition Samajwadi Party delivered a major surprise by capturing key urban constituencies, most notably the high-profile teachers seat located in Varanasi.

The victory in Varanasi quickly became the biggest talking point of the entire election. Varanasi is internationally famous as the parliamentary home constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, making any political defeat there deeply symbolic. The Samajwadi Party candidate, Lal Bihari Yadav, won the teachers seat after a tough round of counting, defeating the ruling alliance nominee. Taking control of this seat right in the heart of the home district of the nation top leader gave the main state opposition a powerful psychological advantage and energized party workers across eastern Uttar Pradesh.

The electoral battle was marked by very different campaign styles between the two rival parties. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath personally took charge of the campaign for the ruling party, traveling extensively across regional districts to address public gatherings and meet educated voters. In contrast, the Samajwadi Party relied mainly on local ground networks, party organizers, and community outreach led by teachers and graduates. Neither the Indian National Congress nor the Bahujan Samaj Party fielded their own candidates, which left the field open for a direct face-off between the ruling party and the main regional opposition.

Beyond Varanasi, the election delivered several other unexpected results in major urban centers. In Lucknow, the administrative capital of the state, the Samajwadi Party dealt another blow to the ruling party by claiming the graduates constituency, where candidate Kanti Singh defeated the incumbent representative. The regional opposition also achieved victory in the Agra teachers constituency, where candidate Akash Agrawal won the election, as well as holding on to the Allahabad-Jhansi graduates seat through candidate Mansingh Yadav. These gains showed that opposition messaging was connecting well with educated voters in urban pockets.

On the other hand, the ruling party demonstrated that its organizational machinery remains tough and effective in several other traditional areas. The party held on to both the graduates and teachers seats in Meerut, with Dinesh Kumar Goyal and Shri Chand Sharma winning their respective races. The ruling party also registered victories in the Agra graduates constituency through Manvendra Pratap Singh and retained the Bareilly-Moradabad teachers seat, where candidate Hari Singh Dhillon won by a wide margin of over seventeen thousand votes. In the Lucknow teachers seat, ruling party nominee Umesh Dwivedi also secured a comfortable win.

However, the contest in Gorakhpur-Faizabad turned into an intense drama that went down to the wire. Ruling party candidate Dhruv Tripathi managed to retain the teachers seat by a paper-thin margin of just over three hundred votes, edging past independent challenger Rajiv Yadav. The narrow outcome led to fierce arguments at the counting center, with the runner-up alleging counting irregularities and demanding an inquiry. Electoral officers had to review multiple rounds of ballots before declaring the official result, highlighting how tight the competition was on the ground.

In October 2026, political analysts looked at these outcomes as an early indicator of voter sentiment ahead of the crucial 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Legislative council polls do not involve the general public, as only enrolled college graduates and school teachers are eligible to register and vote. Because the voting pool consists entirely of educated, salaried, and professional citizens, the strong showing by the Samajwadi Party indicates growing dissatisfaction among middle-class employees regarding state employment rules, job security, and school administration policies.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav congratulated the winning candidates and thanked the teaching community for placing their faith in his party. Party leaders stated that breaking through ruling party defenses in Varanasi and Lucknow proves that the public is looking for change. They claimed that this victory among educated voters will provide the necessary energy to build a statewide movement against the ruling government in the coming years.

Leaders within the ruling party acknowledged that the losses in Varanasi and Lucknow require honest internal review. Party strategists pointed out that while keeping six out of eleven seats keeps the ruling party ahead in the council, losing key urban seats during high-profile contests cannot be overlooked. Senior party managers stressed that the organization must listen more closely to salaried professionals, address specific concerns of educators, and resolve local administrative complaints before the state enters general assembly campaigning.

For ordinary citizens watching the political developments, the election highlights the lively nature of democracy in India largest state. While the ruling party maintains solid organizational strength across multiple regions, the opposition has demonstrated an ability to strike back in the most important political centers. The outcome ensures that the journey toward the 2027 state assembly elections will be fiercely competitive, with both sides working hard to win over voters across every section of society.
