Viral Photo Falsely Linked To Bangladeshi Nationals Executed In Saudi Arabia Actually Shows Egyptian Couple In Mecca

A dramatic and misleading visual post has spread widely across social media networks, causing shock and confusion among millions of internet users across South Asia and the Middle East. The viral posts feature a photograph of a smiling young couple standing reverently in front of the holy Kaaba at the Grand Mosque in Mecca. Accompanying captions claimed that the picture captured two newlywed Bangladeshi citizens who were recently executed by Saudi authorities for showing personal affection inside the sacred complex. Several verified accounts and social media commentators shared the image alongside emotional pleas, generating intense online outrage and debates over religious laws and human rights.

However, a careful investigation into the origins of the photograph reveals that the viral claim is entirely false and misleading. The couple seen in the picture are not Bangladeshi nationals, nor have they ever faced arrest or legal charges by authorities. A reverse image search traces the original image back to a public personal photoshoot shared by an Egyptian lifestyle creator and social media blogger named Jihad Al-Banna and her husband. The image was captured during a family pilgrimage and pregnancy celebration in front of the Kaaba and has no connection whatsoever to any criminal prosecution or legal punishment carried out in Saudi Arabia.

The false narrative gained rapid traction because it was attached to a real event that took place in the Kingdom. Saudi interior authorities recently announced that two Bangladeshi nationals, identified in official statements as a man and a woman, were sentenced to capital punishment following their conviction for carrying out an indecent act inside a mosque located in the holy city. The official statement noted that their actions violated the sanctity of the place of worship, leading courts to confirm the death penalty following standard judicial review.

While the execution of two Bangladeshi individuals did occur, online rumor mills quickly filled informational gaps with fabricated narratives and misattributed images. Viral captions claimed that the executed man had simply kissed his pregnant wife's belly inside the holy site, leading to immediate beheading. In reality, the official press release issued by Saudi Arabia's interior department never revealed the specific details of the offense, nor did it describe the exact nature of the act that triggered the legal action. Furthermore, authorities never released photographs of the convicted individuals, nor did they confirm if the two people were married to each other.

The method of execution described in the viral posts was also completely unconfirmed by official sources. Social media accounts widely claimed that the pair were publicly beheaded by sword, triggering graphic discussions online. Official announcements from the Saudi government merely stated that the sentence was carried out in accordance with discretionary legal powers under Islamic jurisprudence, without specifying the exact method used. Discretionary punishments, known as ta'zir, allow trial judges to determine offenses and penalties where specific codes are not set in advance.

The incident has triggered diplomatic concerns between Dhaka and Riyadh as the Bangladeshi government sought official clarification. Bangladeshi diplomatic officials stated that they were not notified in advance by Saudi authorities before the executions were carried out, creating significant public unease among migrant worker families back home. Over three million Bangladeshi citizens live and work across the Gulf nation, and news of legal action against their countrymen naturally caused widespread anxiety, which malicious social media users quickly exploited by circulating unrelated images.

The spread of this false claim underlines how quickly misleading information travels across online platforms during sensitive global moments. By taking a completely unrelated family photograph of an Egyptian couple and linking it to a high-profile legal execution, social media handles generated hundreds of thousands of shares and misled regular readers who took the emotional posts at face value. The incident serves as an important reminder for internet users to check official government releases and established news outlets before accepting dramatic viral stories as facts.
