On 28th April 2021, Wednesday at 7:51am a major earthquake of magnitude 6.4 occurred in Assam at a depth of 17km on Richter scale and at around 43km west of northern Assam in Sonitpur,Tezpur town, was the epicenter, National centre for Seismology(NCS) reported .
National centre for Seismology (NCS) is an agency run by our Indian government which provides round the clock services throughout the country by monitoring the earthquake activities.
Though the earthquake originated in Assam’s Tezpur, tremors were felt in North East, North Bengal and in areas nearby. People rushed out of their houses in panic because of repeated tremors in parts of the North East. According to the reports, after the major earthquake at 7:51am there were two aftershocks which were recorded at 7:58am and 8:01am at a magnitude of 4.3 and 4.4 respectively.
There are no reports of injuries and loss of life but damage of building and property has been noted. As they could observe cracks in buildings and damages in walls and brick kiln chimneys. According to the locals the earthquake lasted for more than 30 seconds.
Health minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma soon after the earthquake shared the pictures of broken walls inside a building and of broken boundary wall on twitter, in order to describe the impact of earthquake.
“Big earthquake hits Assam. I pray for the well-being of all and urge everyone to stay alert. Taking Updates from all districts”. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal mentioned.
