Historic Seaplane Landing on Brahmaputra Boosts Tourism Potential in Assam

A Canadian seaplane has created history by making its maiden landing on the mighty Brahmaputra River at Pandu Port in Guwahati, Assam. This remarkable event marks a significant advancement for the region’s aviation and tourism industries. The demonstration flight, a collaboration between M/s de Havilland Canada and the Ministry of Civil Aviation, showcased the immense potential of maritime aircraft operations in the Northeast.

The seaplane took off from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati and landed on the Brahmaputra, drawing enthusiastic crowds to Pandu Ghat to witness the groundbreaking moment. Families, children, and dignitaries gathered in large numbers to celebrate this milestone, which promises to transform Assam’s transportation and tourism landscape.

The day before, the same seaplane successfully completed a demonstration flight in Shillong, landing gracefully on Umiam Lake. Following its triumph in Meghalaya, the flight to Guwahati further solidified the promise of water-based aviation services in the region. This historic landing on the Brahmaputra is expected to pave the way for increased connectivity and tourism opportunities across Assam.

Assam Tourism Minister Jayanta Mallah Baruah, who participated in the seaplane journey, expressed immense pride in the achievement. He described the experience of flying over the Brahmaputra as unforgettable, offering breathtaking views of Assam’s natural beauty. Minister Baruah highlighted the state’s abundant water resources and emphasized the potential of seaplane connectivity in linking key destinations like Kaziranga, Majuli, and Umrangsu.

The initiative aims to boost tourism and enhance transportation in Assam, making remote locations more accessible while offering unique travel experiences. Minister Baruah revealed that plans are underway to make the seaplane service operational within a year, promising a revolutionary impact on Assam’s economy and tourism sector. He credited the combined efforts of the state’s Transport and Tourism Departments for making this historic moment possible.

The seaplane’s landing at Pandu Port has sparked excitement about the future of water-based aviation in the region. Officials are optimistic that this development will attract more tourists, improve connectivity to isolated areas, and open up new economic opportunities for Assam. With its scenic rivers and lakes, Assam is poised to become a hub for innovative transportation solutions, drawing attention from both domestic and international visitors.

As the first seaplane to successfully land on the Brahmaputra, this event has set the stage for a transformative future in Assam’s travel and tourism industries, promising new experiences and enhanced connectivity for the state’s vibrant landscapes and cultural heritage.
