Delhi Varanasi Vande Bharat Sleeper Launch Brings Faster Overnight Rail Travel Connecting Two Major Cities

By Raju Saha • 26/10/2026

Long distance train travel between the national capital and eastern Uttar Pradesh is set to enter a modern phase as Indian Railways prepares to introduce a brand new Vande Bharat Sleeper service connecting Delhi and Varanasi. The premium overnight train aims to cut travel hours significantly, allowing business professionals, pilgrims, and students to board at night and arrive fresh at their destination the next morning. The launch will mark another major expansion of the homegrown semi high speed fleet, upgrading passenger comfort with specialized sleeping berths instead of daytime chair cars.

The inaugural journey of the high speed sleeper service is scheduled to take place on October 31, with railway authorities putting finishing touches on track safety checks and station arrangements. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw are expected to flag off the inaugural run. Once regular commercial operations begin, the train will run six days a week, keeping operations suspended only on Saturdays to allow dedicated maintenance teams to inspect electrical systems, brake lines, and coach interiors.

The proposed timetable has been designed to maximize convenience for overnight travelers. According to provisional railway schedules, train number 27421 will begin its journey from Varanasi Junction at 8:50 PM. It will reach Prayagraj Junction at 10:35 PM, halt for five minutes, and depart at 10:40 PM. The train is slated to arrive at Kanpur Central by 12:40 AM before completing its run at New Delhi railway station at 5:55 AM the following morning.

For the return journey, train number 27422 will leave New Delhi station at 9:40 PM. Cruising smoothly through the night, the express will pull into Prayagraj Junction at 4:45 AM the next day. Following a short five minute stop, it will resume its trip at 4:50 AM and reach Varanasi Junction by 6:45 AM. This timetable allows travelers from both ends to complete a full working day, travel in comfort through the night, and reach their destination in time for morning appointments without losing productive hours.

The train composition features sixteen fully air conditioned coaches designed to carry over eight hundred passengers across multiple travel tiers. Unlike earlier chair car rakes, the sleeper version is built with specialized berths made of extra cushioning foam, smooth suspension systems that reduce track vibrations, and soundproof panels that keep cabin noise low. Each berth is equipped with individual reading lights, mobile charging ports, and personal storage space. The train also features modern bio vacuum toilets, sensor operated doors, and automatic fire detection devices to ensure passenger safety.

Ticket fares for the premium sleeper service will be calculated on a per kilometer basis depending on the class of travel. Railway officials indicated that base rates will range from two rupees and forty paise to three rupees and eighty paise per kilometer, excluding applicable taxes. Passengers can book berths in three tier, two tier, or first class air conditioned coaches. In line with premium railway policy for this class of train, there will be no reservation against cancellation tickets, ensuring that every confirmed passenger gets a dedicated berth without crowding.

The introduction of the sleeper rake directly addresses long standing passenger demand along one of the busiest rail corridors in northern India. Existing mail and superfast trains on the route often run with long waiting lists, especially during festival seasons and major pilgrimage periods. By adding a faster overnight option that covers the distance in roughly nine hours, the new service will take pressure off conventional trains while providing an alternative to costly last minute air tickets.

Local trade organizations, tourism operators, and regular commuters in Varanasi and Prayagraj have welcomed the planned rollout. The faster connection is expected to give a strong boost to temple tourism in the holy city of Varanasi and support trade links between industrial centers in Kanpur and wholesale markets in the national capital. As railway authorities finalize booking dates on the passenger reservation system, travelers are preparing to experience overnight train journeys with modern amenities, better speed, and greater comfort.
