During his address on India’s 78th Independence Day, PM Modi urged the induction of one lakh young individuals into the political system, specifically those whose families have no history in politics. This initiative, he explained, is part of a broader effort to combat the evils of nepotism and casteism in Indian politics.
Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition and a frequent target of the BJP’s criticism over dynastic politics, was present at the event.
“I want to see one lakh new entrants in our political system, from Gram Panchayats to the Lok Sabha, whose families have been disconnected from politics for generations. We need fresh blood in Indian politics to eradicate casteism and nepotism,” Modi declared from the podium.
He emphasized that these individuals need not align with a specific party but should join any party they choose to serve as representatives of the people.
“This initiative will bring a fresh perspective and strengthen India’s democracy,” Modi added.
This year’s Independence Day marked PM Modi’s 11th address from the Red Fort, making him the third Prime Minister, after Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, to reach this milestone. The theme for this year’s celebrations, “Viksit Bharat @ 2047,” underscores the government’s goal of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047.
PM Modi’s speech on Thursday was his longest Independence Day address, lasting 98 minutes. His speeches typically average 82 minutes, surpassing those of previous prime ministers. Jawaharlal Nehru and IK Gujral previously held the record for the longest speeches, at 72 and 71 minutes, respectively. Nehru and Indira Gandhi also delivered the shortest speeches, clocking in at 14 minutes in 1954 and 1966.
